Gather some herbs and place them in some cheesecloth tied closed (i suggest rosemary, sage, parsley, etc.). Shove that inside the bird (wear a rubber glove--he-he). Cut up some whole lemons into halves and shove them in as well. Then, take softened butter--with a knife or spatula (i usually use my hand)--smear some all over the bird. You could layer the bottom of the crockpot with some slow cooking veggies (such as carrots--use the mini one already cleaned in a bag). You could also layer some onions, celery. Always add 1 cup of liquid--I would try white wine or chicken broth (maybe a mixture). Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours for a 4 lb chicken (juice will run clear when you you stick it with a fork when if is completely cooked). If the chicken is not as brown as you would like, place it in a baking pan in a 400 degree oven for about 15 minutes. You should have nice juices that you could then make a gravy with. Maybe make some red roasted potatoes in the oven drizzled with some olive oil and s&p. There you go...think i'm going to head to the store now to buy a roaster!!! HTH ... just a recipe i made up as i was typing.

I just looked in a crock pot recipe book (Betty Crocker) I have from the library. It says - "We recommend not cooking whole poultry such as chicken, turkey and Rock Cornish hens, in a slow cooker. It takes too long for a safe cooking temperature to reach the bone." Maybe you better just roast it.
Good luck!

Chicken in a Pot
2 carrots, sliced
2 onions, sliced (I just used some dried flakes)
2 celery stalks with leaves, cut in 1” pieces
3 pound broiler/fryer chicken
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon coarse black pepper (regular is fine too)
½ cup water, chicken broth, or white wine
½ teaspoon basil
Put carrots, onion and celery in bottom of crock-pot. Add whole chicken. Top with salt, pepper, liquid. Sprinkle basil over top. Cover; cook on low 8-10 ours (High 3 ½ to 5 hours, using 1 cup water). Remove chicken and vegetable with spatula.
4 servings
Guess I should go stick this in the crock-pot thread too.

I know our grocery store deli has already cooked, seasoned and roasted chickens. They're not much more price-wise than the raw deal, and it's a quick meal for your family. My kids love them.
BTW, I'm joining you on the raw chicken boat. I went to make a roaster chicken this week, and when I opened up the package, it still had a ton of feathers left on it!!! Eeeeeewwwwwwwwww... Needless to say we ended up with frozen pizza that night.

The recipe for a bowling fowl in my crockpot cookbook is the similar to Aprils but uses 1 carrot, 1 onion and rosemary and thyme instead of basil. It says to use the meat on the chicken as is or in others dishes and use the left over stock for soup etc. I have never actually tried this recipe. If it is a bowling fowl (an old bird) then my recipe says to cook on high for 5-6 hours. I guess you could use the same recipe for a normal whole chicken but just cook 8-10 hours on low.
My crockpot cookbook has a recipe for Stuffed Roast Chicken which is basically to stuff it and then cook in the crockpot. I have never done this either.
What I do do is this. Stuff an apple in the cavity, put the bird in the crockpot and sprinke with paprika. Bang it on low and cook for 8-10 hours. Chicken will fall from the bone and be very tender. I use the meat in other recipes that require cooked chicken because it is bland. Great in sandwiches and wraps. I sometimes cook one up and then freeze some of the meat.
Have fun.

My favorite whole chicken recipe in the crockpot can also be used on a turkey breast. I have even put a frozen chicken in the crockpot before leaving for work and when 5:30 rolls around it is done!
1 can whole cranberry sauce
1/2 C orange juice
1 pkg dry onion soup mix
Whisk together and pour over your chicken (or turkey breast) and cook on low 8 hours.
