Help With Cutting Pictures In Psp9

Hi All,

I'm glad I found this great site, I love it! Can anyone who is a PSP user tell
me how to get the pictures cut in different shapes specifically round or oval. You know in paper scrapbooking you would use templates to cut the pictures in ovals or circles or stars or whatever, but I can't figure out how to do it in PSP. I have version 9 but I'm sure it probably hasnt changed. Thanks so much! :dancingcow:

Love love love the dancing cow!

Hey,
Welcome to ScrapGirls! I can't help you with your program, but trust me, someone will be along shortly with answers to your quetions.
Am I right to assume that your name is Elsie? That's my Mom's and she hates it. She's 61, so when she was a kid, all she ever heard about was Elsie the Cow. Isn't is a shame that someone can go and ruin something that's supposed to be fun? Oh, well.
Hope you like a good joke and to chat. You're in the right place!!!
Don't forget to go and check out Jennifer's bingo game in the forums. Another round will start soon. :waving-hi:

Welcome! Glad to see another PSP user!

Here's how I cut out my shapes -- select your selection tool on the left hand border, then use the drop down menu on the toolbar to select the shape that you want. It's usually set to a rectangle -- you can also get a star, circle, etc. Then draw the shape that you want where you want it. Make sure you're on the layer you'd like "cut", then go to Selection ---> Invert. This should select everything outside the shape you selected. Then you can hit delete or clear to get rid of all the excess.

There are some other ways to do it but this is the easiest for me. The only hard part is that you can't move the selection around once you put it down (or if you can, I haven't figured it out!) and the circle can be tricky.

Another way to do it that you can manipulate a bit is to create a new layer and then use the shape tool to draw the shape you like on the new layer. Then you can lower your opacity so you can see the layer that you want to trim, and resize/recenter as you like. Then, use your magic wand tool to select the entire shape. Then move to the layer you want to trim, go to Layer ---> Invert and clear or delete. Now you can delete that extra layer with the shape on it and you should have what you want.

Hope that helped... and if not, let me know and I'll see if I can help. I'm not great at it but I'm learning slowly LOL!

Hi Dee Zee,

Thanks for the info. PSP frustrates me sometimes. Right now I'm trying to do what you said with the selection tools and when I open my photo the selection tool is not available for use. Its a JPG photo so that can't be the problem I tried creating a new layer a vector layer a raster layer, nada. Got any clue? Whats your favorite PSP function that you use most of the times in your layouts? Talk to you soon.

Thanks! :dancingcow:

When you say the selection tool is not available, do you mean that it's greyed out or that you can't see it? If you can't see it, it might be that you have to go to "View" "Toolbars" and then "Tools". You should have the tool toolbar running down the left-hand side of your screen then. If that doesn't work, let me know and we'll try some other stuff.

My favorite function... hmnmmmm... I've been playing with all kinds of things lately. Made a brush from a photo today (I'm proud of myself for figuring that out!). I also use drop shadows on every layout. and i'm always using the Virtual Photographer plug in (which isn't really Paint Shop Pro LOL!). The eraser is also my friend, as is the magic wand selection tool.

I just figured out how to move the selection marquis around if it's not where you want it (and it usually isn't with circles and ovals). Choose the Move tool and RIGHT click and hold inside the shape. Then you can drag it where you want. Hope this hekps! I certainly have been using it a lot.
