Keeping Track Of Elements In Layout

I do what Elizabeth does. Then I copy and paste it into the File Info (File>File Info> type in the "description" box) Then the information will show up in the gallery under the "details" button. Just don't use the "save for web" option- or it won't show up. I copy and paste the product name from the top line of the history palette. I know some other girls copy the info. using "save as" but this way is faster for me.

I leave all my supplies open and down in the bin until I am done. Then I just open up the file info. and type the item names in there. I close them as I go so I don't forget anything. I just started doing it this way and I really like it!

And some of us oldies just keep a pad and pen handy on the desktop and take notes. The actual piece-of-furniture desktop, not the virtual one! I use a 5.5 x 8.5 sketch pad as a mouse pad which make it easy for me to always have something to write on. I date the pages even...and it becomes a primitive sort of journal for me.

Then, when I upload my image, I just type in the supplies from my notes. Dull and boring, I know. But it works for me. ;-)

Where is the history palette (PSE5)? I just click on the name in the layer (name them as I go) & right click & Rename. Then I copy the name & cancel the Rename box. Might be faster to use the history palette but gotta find it first! I haven't seen that one yet!

I use PS CS2, so I'm not sure if you even have one. I know the programs are pretty different, so it might not be in exactly the same place--but it is where is saves the steps so you can go back.

mine starts witht he name of the document, then the first line is open- it only saves a certain amount, but the original always stays at the top. (Really shouldn't change when you're just dragging the piece int oyou layout.) Mine has a tab that says history and is in a box above the layers- but since I see other things in the boxes that PSE can't do, I'd assume it is different. Sorry I can't help you more.

I'm with Sarah, plain old Post-it note sitting on my desk.

Although, Elizabeth & April's idea have me thinking. I would probably run into trouble with my "combined" files -I frequently use 2-4 different papers to create the final look of one piece of paper-.

Do you guys rename your text layers with the font names?

I don't rename the layers of text because I can identify the layers more easily by the words. I paste styles and fonts (or I try to remember to do the fonts;)) into the file info as I'm working. Only gives me problems when I change things a lot. Have to go through and double check the info.

I add a layer at the very bottom of the layers palette, underneath all of my other layers. I make a list there. Then when I need it, I just open up the PSD file and there it is. I tried just keeping everything open and making a list at the end, and I tried renaming my layers, but I was always forgetting the styles and actions that I used, and I tend to combine papers with SS templates and things, so renaming the layers just didn't work for me-the names got too long, LOL. :)

Now Anna, that's a very good idea!
