I'm new to SG and am trying to learn brushes. I purchased the Mastering Brushes e-booklet and am having problems right from the start. I use PSE 5 and it says the examples in the ebook are in PSE 2 so that could be the problem. In the first exercise it says to change the lighting direction so the shadow will come on the left hand side of the paper. I cannot figure out how to do that. Can anybody help me out?

I do not know if it really is this, but let's have a try. The lightning direction of a shadow has nothing to do with the brush tool itself.
Take your layer with your brushwork on it. Add a shadow under 'layer styles' 'drop shadows'. If added right besides the name of you layer appears a little 'light?', click twice on it and a window pops up. There you can adjust the light angle.
Hope this helps

Peppi gave you the right instructions. Even though the screen shots were created in PSE 2.0. They should transfer easily into the other programs. If you do run into a glitch you can email me, or post it here. I'm currently in the process of going through and fixing a few things so that it transfers easily to the new 5.0 and 6.0. It's really hard to write a book with instructions that can easily work in all 5 versions of PSE. If you have a questions feel free to ask and we'll help you out with it.
