Thinking Of Switching To Mac - But Have Questions 1st

My laptop is dying, I believe, or at least the screen seems to be going. It's only 1-1/2 years old, but it was a refurbished model from Costco, so no warranty.

Basically, the only programs I use on my laptop are Photoshop Elements 4.0, Acdsee, and I have Photoshop CS2 that I've never installed, but certainly want to.

I know you can get the Parallels program, but don't things run slower using that?

Or, and I'm being lazy here in not wanting to dig out my CD and thought someone might know, do both the PC and Mac versions reside on the same CD of Photoshop? I thought I read somewhere you could just call them up to transfer the license from one system to another.

I'm just tired of always having to replace my computer hardware so often and having to deal with Windows and the problems it always seems to create.

Also, if I should decide to make the switch, any recommendations on a laptop to get?

Thanks.

Parallels does run slower if you install Vista, but if you install XP, supposedly it's faster than on a PC. I know some people who switched and are fine using their programs in parallels, but I don't think I'd recommend it for CS2. I haven't done it, but I think if you switch the license, they also send you the new cd in the mail.

If you can afford it, I'd say go for the MacBook Pro! I'll be getting just the plain MacBook this summer, but will be upgrading the RAM to 2 GB.

I just joined the message board with the same questions in my mind. Someone pointed me to this area and sure enough someone else with the same questions!

My laptop is two years old and is overheating. PSPXI is just too taxing on it - it sets cache files all over and has to constantly run around the computer and check them all out while I'm trying to scrap. So I decided to look at the Macs and running a parallel Windows system. I do some consulting work and need some Windows stuff.

From my research, you can run a windows program using Bootcamp (when you start up the Mac you choose to run Mac or Windows) thereby running Windows and their programs are very quick. The downside to this method is, if you want to switch to the Mac side, you have to close the Windows side down and switch over. Running Parallels or Fusion (the alternative running neck-and-neck with Parallels) will give you the ability to run a Windows program simultaneously with Mac programs-I hope this is true because I would still like to use my Evernote program. I have also read that running Vista does make it slower. (I am ordering XP for the Windows side.) I have decided to take the plunge and get the Mac. Having said that, I have also chosen to try to switch everything to a Mac platform (like getting Photoshop for Macs) because I want to get the most benefit from having switched to a Mac. I have ordered an iMac and it will come withing 2 weeks-I am upgrading to a 500GB Hard Drive and 4GB Ram right off the bat. I want the Mac to last longer than this HP laptop did. I went with the desktop because I wanted the most compter that I could afford. I can let you know in a couple of weeks what I think of it if you want.

I am reading this thread with interest. I am also considering switching to a Mac from a PC for the same reasons as Terri. I scrap with PSE5 and really like it. I talked with Adobe sales yesterday to get the scoop on a platform switch. If I was going from PSE6 PC to PSE6 Mac, there is no charge to switch. Because I am going from PSE5 to PSE6, I am upgrading, so I have to pay the upgrade price. Never mind the fact that they didn't come out with PSE5 for the mac...But, that's still better than starting completely over from scratch (maybe saves $10-15). I also want to get the most out of using a mac, so it seems like a good idea to use mac software instead of pc. Anyone have any experience with running PSE5 for pc on a mac with Parallels? I have XP now and probably wouldn't change to Vista unless some of you have any compelling evidence why I should. Please let us know shat your thoughts are.

Thanks!

Kathy

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I paid $300 almost a year ago for CS2 and have never installed it! So upgrading again for another $300 is out of the question, especially if I have to buy a new laptop as well.

My current laptop is still working, I think the screen is giving me occasional problems due to maybe a loose connection, but I don't know. It only happens occasionally when I'm moving it and I've probably been very bad in my method of grabbing it by the screen and the base, rather than just the base.

Someday I'll get that Mac....

Hey girls! Just wanted to pop over here to say if/when you switch to Mac you won't be sorry. I grew up on Appple computers but used many a-PC in college and work. I have always come back to Macs though for the computers that I purchase. I wish I could give more info about running Bootcamp or Parallel but I haven't ever had to do it! Everything I used to do, before I became a SAHM could be done on Macs and PC. I mostly used Office and I could go from either platform with the documents that I made. Terri you may want to call Adobe to see what they tell you about switching over to a Mac platform. Perhaps they could help you out. Good luck guys! If you ever need Mac help just post. There are plenty of us Mac-types here!

To the best of my knowledge you have to purchase Mac or PC for PS, so unfortunately like you said if you have the PC version brand new it would be of no use to you with a Mac. If you really want to get a Mac, which I LOVE my Mac, see if you can find someone that you may be able to sell your software too. If you have friends that like to do this type of stuff, someone may be wanting to upgrade and would be willing to buy your PC software. Just a thought!

I really want a MacBook Pro, but that will be way in the future. I am very happy with my G5 and its large screen, the best part of this version is that the computer is combined with the monitor, so it all fits in one small space. I love that!

  • 4 weeks later...

I just purchased my first mac laptop and I called adobe about ps, b/c mine is pc version. They told me that I could purchase pscs3 for upgrade price if they deactivated my pc version of pscs2. Upgrade price is better than full price anyday, so just an option for other switchers! Call them, the website doesn't say that, says upgrade is only good for same platform.

HTH someone!
