I'm new to this forum but I really believe in prayer. My family is taking our daughter to New York tomorrow morning for a portfolio review at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her interview is Saturday at 1:00. This is such a huge life step for her. She lives, eats, breaths, drawing + designing clothing and costumes. She watches all the fashion stuff on tv. She is so serious that the local colleges just were not up to her expectations. She has spent the last month working on her home test they sent and sewing a few outfits to show. I know God has a plan and what is suppose to happen will, I just ask that she is confident Sat. during the interview and calm. Also that there are no problems getting to the city etc.. As a Mom I want so much for her dreams to come true. Being on this site for the past year and seeing all the designers who get to design everyday has given me the confidence to let her persue a career in the arts. It hasn't always been easy for me and I was afraid for her financial security but satisfaction is so important to your happiness and fullfillment in your daily work. This is truly her gift and so I have to let her try. This is such a big time school I just pray she gives them her best and that they will see her talent and committment. Thanks for your prayers!

I certainly will be praying for her. I think its great that you are behind her ! My belief is that as parents we need to be behind our kids in their career choice (as Long as its legal and not harmful) in order for them to be a success. Its been a real test for me with my oldest son in the Army and my second son is a Musician.
Please keep us informed !

All the best for your daughter, Sherri!

Has she ever heard of practicing the event ahead of time in her mind? Musicians and athletes do it a lot. It's very VERY useful. What you do is imagine yourself all dressed up in the outfit you will wear, carrying what you will carry, hearing your footsteps as you walk, seeing yourself walk into the room, place the portfolio on the table, sit in the chair, speak comfortably to the interviewers, feeling yourself being relaxed, etc. You practice every single detail in your mind until you can make it come out right and your body responds in a relaxed, confident way.

if she hasn't heard of it before, you might suggest that she tries it. tell her to breath in slowly and let the air out even more slowly as she visualizes. That keeps the body relaxed.

HTH!!

Sherri - I'll say a prayer for her and for you. I can totally relate. My daughter is pursuing a career as a photographer and is just finishing her second year of college. Although I worry about her financial security I totally agree that her happiness is most important. She is fully aware of the challenges in the path she has chosen and is looking forward to facing them head-on! I pray that the right doors open for her and the right opportunities present themselves at the right time and so I will pray the same for your daughter. To God be the glory!

I will be praying for your doughter and for you too. It is a wonderful thing for her to follow her dream, and a very loving act for you to believe in her and help her make the stride she needs.

I believe that the Lord gives talents to people and that they should be able to use them to thier fullest and to fulfill thier dreams.

Janie,
I am a professional portrait photographer. What kind of photography is she hoping to pursue? The field is getting more difficult because of the advancement of digital. Everyone can take phots and mess with them if they have the desire. But not everyone is talented and I am trusting God that I will still have clients that value what I can do for their families and children. I wish her much luck, it is a very personally satisfying career if you can find a place to work that lets you express yourself. I will be praying for her also!
Thank you all, we are in the airport as I am writing this and very excited! You all are so kind. Elizabeth is very impressed so many women are thinking of her. We won't know the outcome for a few weeks but I'll let you know how the interview goes. Thanks again so much.

How wonderful that she's found her calling so early in life. So many kids sort of flounder for years before they find their niche. I'll certainly be thinking of your family. Let us know how it goes!

I want to thank all of you for praying. Please keep her in your prayers. The interview was strange. They told her maybe she should attend a university in Ohio then maybe come there. Not sure what that means. The other kids were high school kids also. Anyway, they will make their decision in 2 to 3 weeks. I just don't want her to be crushed if they turn her down. We understand that God has a plan and she is spiritually mature for her age but she is still just 17 and hasn't had the disapointments life gives you. I just pray she will accept what ever comes and trust God to direct her steps. I'll keep you all posted in a few weeks!

I am just now reading this - but I will pray for your daughter, for you, and for the judges to recognize the qualities that you know your daughter has. -Don't be discouraged by their ... 'maybe go to a school in Ohio first' advice. They may only be concerned for her 'being out on her own' and 'moving to the big city', the maturity that comes from that... Maybe they told everybody that just so they won't be dashed if they don't get accepted the first time around.

As for that financial security, my DH is a working musician - has been for 40+ years. I tell everybody that his dad told him to get something to fall back on, he just never did. (AND this is true) It's a feast or famine kind of a life --- but I can tell you that it is so incredibly rewarding watching him being able to live his dream. Fellow musicians who gave up the uncertainty of an artist's life who now have jobs of financial security are very envious that he is still able to go out and make a living doing what he loves, doing what God put him here to do. I would work at McDonalds to help make ends meet before I'd ever make him give up his dream.

If this avenue doesn't work out immediately, perhaps HE has another route in mind for her. HE knows her heart, her strength, her soul. She is stronger than even you know. The way you described her in your first post, she has a strength and a resolve and high quality standards. She'll make her way. You've given her the solid foundation for her to land on when she does fall. When a bird first tries out her wings, she is bound to fall once or twice. It's not how many times she falls, It's how many times she gets back up.

I might be a little late in posting this, but what Ro says is quite true. Seeing the event ahead of time and playing it out in your mind does work. I use it a lot when I want things to go a certain way. It truly works. Good thoughts and love are going out to you and your daughter. Select It.......Project It........Expect It.........
