Ehd Crashed!

Recommended Posts

My EHD containing all my photos crashed earlier this week... :banghead:

A couple of days ago, it just wouldn't open!

And it didn't show up at all in "My Computer"...

When I connected it to another PC, it said it was "unreadable" and contained "no data"... :disappearing-smilie:

I burn everything to DVD:s, but I hadn't "had time" to do that with the photos from the last couple of months...

A wedding in November, the staff christmas-party in December and our trip to the US for X-mas and New Year's... :grr:

But for some reason I signed up for Mozy at the end of January, and the first thing I decided to back up was my

photo-EHD! Then my internal HD's and right now I'm in the process of backing up my "Scrap Stash"-EHD...

So, now they've "packaged" all the photos I "lost" and I'm downloading as we speak!

And I'm going to burn extra copies of them asap!!!

The best $54.95 I've ever spent is for my Mozy-account!!! :dancingelephant:

Now I have to go out and buy a new EHD for my photos, and I'm NOT buying another WesternDigital "MyBook"...

I'm buying a Maxtor instead! I've got my Scrap Stash on a Maxtor, and I have one at the office that has been faithful for

a number of years now!

So what have I learned? :breakdance:

For your skin: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

And for your memories: Back up, back up, back up!

The only two rules you have to live by!

I recently reformatted my computer and am in the process of getting everything backed up to Mozy again. Just $5 a month for unlimited is SO worth it, in my book!

I also back up my photos and layouts (the PSD files) periodically onto DVDs and put them in my safe deposit box at the bank. I'm paranoid but I will NOT lose my critical files!

Just curious - I'd like to hear how long some of your uploads to Mozy took. I am on day 4 and nowhere near finished!

I'm backing up a little bit at a time - or HD by HD...

When I backed up the EHD that just crashed, it took almost 8 days!

And I'm on a very fast connection (24Mb), but uploading takes longer than downloading.

So, 8 days to back up 49Gb. But sometimes I reduced the speed of the back-up because I was working with other things on that PC.

When I backed up my internal HD's, it only took 5 days.

The same amount of stuff, ca 49Gb, but I let the back-up run it's course and didn't use the PC during that time!

Hang in there!

It's sooo worth all the time it takes!

Trust me!

Re: how long it takes to back up with Mozy...

I started with 64 GBs of pics and digital scrapbook material to back up. Now I admit that I have turned down the backup speed whenever I knew I was going to be on the computer for a while, and twice I restarted my computer and forgot to turn the Mozy back-up on for a day or two...but it has taken 4 weeks to get 40 GBs backed up! I still have more than 24 GB to go! I know it will be worth it someday, but yikes!

Still, Mozy does EHDs, and that means a lot to me because my internal HD is stuffed to the gills and I needed to move all my scrapbook stuff to the EHD. I am willing to wait if my stuff is going to be safe.

thanks Cathy. I agree that it is definitely worth it! I was curious and also want to make sure I keep backing up to DVDs until it's done!

Oh good thng you had it ! I have been putting off backing up and getting Mozy for my EHD. Did you know that Maxtor (which is the best BTW) also makes Seagate. I didn''t know that until my computer tech guy told me, I bought a 500mb EHD by Seagate with a full 1yr warranty. I have had it for about 6 months now with absolutely no problems . I paid under $100.00 for it.

I just thought I'd share this with you in case you didn't know

I don't back up EVERYTHING onto Mozy.

I save all the zips for my purchased kits. They're backed up. All of my .PSD files for my pages. I don't have a TON of those yet. All of my digital pictures. Again, not a ton. I didn't take a whole lot of pictures before I started scrapping.

Once I got those backed up, I'll back up a directory or two at a time until I've got everything I *want* backed up.

I only run Mozy at night because it interferes with our Vonage telephone during the day.

I keep everything on my hard drive and back it up twice a day onto my external hard drive. So the non-essentials are in two places if the computer fails, but if the house burns down I don't care too much about the freebies I've downloaded. My photos and pages and paid-for kits are safe.

I am using Mozy too, and it does take a while to get it all uploaded. I'm still uploading as we speak, and have been for about a month now, give or take my forgetting to turn it back on after a restart. I'm backing up over 150 GB though. I'm down to my last 11GB. I had an issue with it not connecting with their server, emailed customer service, did a live chat, and was up and running within 24hrs. I got locked out of the system. They were awesome and continued follow up for at least a week to make sure it was working properly. I highly recommend them, and they had an upgrade sometime in Feb. and It's running even better.

I'm so pleased to see that everything is running smooth Thess, and that your getting your photos back!!!

I've got a question. I'd love to get Mozy so I can stop worrying so much, but I'll be getting a new laptop sometime this summer. What happens when that is the case? Is it worth backing up for a few months and then starting all over again, and do I need to start another account to do it?

You'll use your same account even with a new computer.

You can sign up now - just worry about the most important stuff right now - this summer, after you get the new system, start backing up EVERYTHING.

Thanks! I'll do that.

I'm backing up my laptop to one of the EHD's I've got connected to my stationary PC.

And that EHD is part of the "package" when I back up to Mozy...

That way, I get all my important stuff from my laptop backed-up too!
