Oh, I loved The Hardy Boys! Oh, Shawn Cassidy was dreamy! Next to that I liked Nancy Drew, and Little House on the Prairie, and Ramona. I also liked Black Beauty. But those Hardy Boys stole my heart!

One of my favorite authors was E. S. Nesbit and I read anything of hers that I could find. Some of her better known books are The Five Children and It and Railway Children.

I was such a fan of Madeleine L'Engle I bought every book by her that I could find, including an out-of-print one I found at a used booksale. I still have them all--well worn from rereading--and look forward to sharing them with my children. Already I've read other childhood favorites to my oldest daughter, such as the Ramona Quimby series.

Depending on the snapshot in time I early on liked any Dr. Seuss book. Wingles and wangles and booguls....Ok so I still enjoy them but now I read them to my kids because they enjoy them.
If you like historical romance/time travel read the series by Diana Gabaldon. Absolutely wonderful author though very wordy - current book A Breath of Snow and Ashes is 1432 pages. Though you could start with any of the books I highly recommend starting from the first book to get the full experience.

I had a ton of books growing up. We always seemed to live with my Granny and I slept with her most of the time. I would make her stop reading her what I like to call "Indian Romance" you know the one with the Indian Man on front with the Woman in his arms laid back...LOL! I know she got tired of reading the same books over and over.

Anyway, one I remember specifically that I cannot find or don't know the name of it but it goes something like this: A man who wore a suit had a prize apple or tomato which he sat in his window. I think he had a bird in his apt. too and then a cat got stuck up a tree and the firemen to come get the cat down, etc...Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I do remember reading Beverly Cleary books and one particular set that sticks in mind is "Happy Hollisters" kind of like the Brady Bunch IMO. My Mom had the set from when she was a child. I really loved those!

Being a middle school reading teacher I could not resist this one. Here are a few of my childhood favs: Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Little Women and most Judy Blume books. Since my son learned to read he reminded of how wonderful The Giving Tree is and through my daughter I love I'm Gonna Like Me by Jamie Lee Curtis. I am rereading Harry Potter this summer and my other fav for the middle school set is The Book Thief. It was soooo good. I recommend it to parents with middle schoolers. Being a teacher it is hard for me to pick just one.

I loved Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time and always gave it to my nieces and nephews! My town librarian was an old 'fuddy duddy' and wouldn't let girls check out the Hardy Boys books and vice versa for boys and Nancy Drew. So of course my neighbor boys and I checked out what we could and then traded books. I still laugh about that part, but as a library/media specialist for the public schools I could never imagine doing such a thing to the kids.

I read all the Trixie Belden books and loved them, but they were not necessarily my favorites. I spent hours and hours at the library when I was a kid and then reading my treehouse in the back yard.

Another Trixie Belden fan, here! I even named my horse that I got in 6th grade, Trixie, after Trixie Belden. Love those as well as Nancy Drew, all the Beverly Cleary books, most Judy Blume, Madeline L'Engle, The Indian in the Cupboard series, The Fairy Rebel is a great book. I read all the time when I was a kid, and I read my books over and over and over. Till they were worn out. My parents couldn't keep up with my book habit. It's really hard to pick just one book. In fact, I can't!

The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Dana Girls, a couple of books by Elizabeth Enright...Gone Away Lake and Return to Gone Away, Little Women, Little Men, Little House books, Boxcar children, although I got tired of them...they seemed to all be the same.
Those were the most remembered. If you can't tell from my list, ANY mystery would do!

What a fun thread -- brings back so many memories. I loved so many that have been mentioned: A Wrinkle In Time, the Little House series, Little Women (and Little Men and Jo's Boys and Eight Cousins), The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbitt; Nancy Drew and yes, Trixie Belden. I also adored The Princess and the Goblin by George Macdonald, the whole series of Magic books by Edward Eager (Half Magic, Magic By the Lake, Seven Day Magic). My all-time favorites were the Betsy-Tacy series (not terribly well-known) by Maud Hart Lovelace. I've recently introduced my 8-year-old dd to those, and I've created another fan!

Having kids and introducing them to those beloved books has been one of the most enjoyable parts of parenting for me -- books were such a refuge and comfort for me as a child and I love sharing a love of reading with my own kids.
