Has Anyone Purchased From Sonic Cameras?

Hi,

I was wandering around the web today and stumbled across SonicCameras.com as part of my obsessive search for the best price on the Canon EOS Rebel XTi I wish to purchase. I have been researching this purchase for quite a while and am very familiar with the prices at the majority of online vendors.

When I saw this site and the prices my first thought was "wow, I must order this right now". My second thought was "what's wrong with it" followed immediately by "what's the catch". I have read the testimonials on this site and am very impressed by the feedback from the customers but I am also aware that a merchant would be highly unlikely to post negative feedback.

So, as I trust all of you and your opinions better than the opinions of strangers on another website, have any of you purchased from Sonic Cameras? I want this to be the "real deal" as I can purchase exactly what I have been wishing for with the money I have saved but I am leary.

I can't help you with that website but I can tell you that I bought my camera (Panasonic FZ7) from B&H and I was very happy with the price and service. I spent a lot of time researching and reading reviews in order to find the best digital camera to meet my priorities. Then I started researching WHERE to buy. B&H offered the best price and shipped it quickly. I LOVE this camera and highly recommend it and B&H.

Wow, Laurie! Thanks for that info. Silly of me not to think of googling. I was reasonably sure that there was some sort of problem but I was hoping.... As I searched their site I found:

"Sonic Cameras.com carries US & Non-US products. Non US products may be considerably less expensive. The product packaging may or may not include all software, accessories, and features intended for US customers. Please allow three to four weeks for delivery on some international products. USA warranty may be additional. Images and specifications are for illustrative purposes only. "

If the stated specifications of a product are for illustrative purposes only then there is no way for anyone to know what they are actually ordering. They could put anything in the box and tell you that is what you ordered. Scary. Definitely too good to be true!!!

Silver - thanks for the suggestion. I will go and see what B&H has to offer.

Well to add on - My experience with Sonic Cameras - I tried to order a Canon lens - they showed the exact SKU - that Amazon had. But, Sonic's price was $188.00 less. And Free shipping.

But, the next day, I was asked to call and verify my order - all went well, they just verified my address.

Until - here's the good part - now they needed to know - HOW did I want to MOUNT my lens to my camera - did I want to pay for a metal or plastic lens mount.

I had the Amazon info in front of me, and a LENS mount is Part of the LENS.

He quickly expained that if I didn't order the more expenisive METAL lens mount - that I could only use the lens at 1600 asa.

I started to cancel my entire order, and he said well this ONCE he would GIVE me the Metal one - costing an additional $89.00 dollars plus tax and shipping for free.

I said ok, but, thought about it, and talked to a couple of people, and called back to cancel, And, the sales person, just said fine, and hung up on me.

I had to call back to get a cancellation number.

I have since ordered and received my lens from Amazon (oh, and it has a metal lens mount).

I order everything from the Internet, thought I had done my homework, thought I had compared the products, but, missed that one key element - Sonic lens do not always have lens mounts on their lens.... That is extra..

Be careful who you order from.

Wow! I went to the link that Laurie provided and read all the negative letters. It's amazing that the company is still doing business. Thanks for the heads up. I'm not in the market for a camera currently but I will remember not to shop from this company when I am!

My daughter had a similar experience to this - only he upsold her on a bunch of "better" stuff that was really not better and 3x the price as anywhere else. She called him back to cancel he told her NO! Then he said he'd cancel if she FedEx'd a money order for $29.56 then it was for $29.99. This was just a few minutes after she'd called to "authorize her order". She originally used AmEx - he told her she need to use MC or Visa as AmEx takes 4-6 weeks to authorize. Huge Red Flags everywhere. She ended up having to cancel her MC and AmEx and have new numbers issued.

Steer Clear of this guy - definitely too good to be true and a classic Bait and Switch operation.

Ladies, there are SO MANY scams out there. I barely escaped by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin! If it sounds too good to be true - IT IS! There are so many ways that they get to you...

-quote you this awesome price, but then the battery is extra, the lens mount is extra.... etc. etc.

-tell you that they indeed have your camera in stock, sell you all the "extras" too... you receive and sign for your box from shipping company, but all that is inside is the battery or camera bag or something... Well, they will claim that you signed for your entire order. IF you ever get your camera, it's probably about 6 months later.

-we found out scam after scam after scam that were all about getting your credit cards charged up huge amounts, but never receiving your actual ordered merchandise.

BH Photo is one reputable place that is trusted throughout the business.

The place that nearly got us was located in the back of an old warehouse in the really bad part of town with graffiti all over the building... SCARY..

PLEEEEEZ do your homework and don't get taken!

Just thought I would throw in an endorsement for B&H. I got a lens there and they were great. They are also very clear about what the USA merchandise is all about. They do sell gray market stuff but they are clear about what that means. They were very fast and I didnt' have a single problem with my order. Good luck finding your camera!
