mimes1
How many styles can PSE 5 hold? I'm tired of 4 only being able to hold 19 and want to upgrade. That and being able to colorize my own drop shadows is reason enough to upgrade. Thanks
Jennifer in NC
There is a limit, but I"m not sure exactly what it is. I get around it because 5 has a different place to save styles than 4. They're in folders within the location, so I just have loads of ASL files within each folder with the folders having names like SG Metal Styles, SG Paper Styles, SG Fabric & Stitching, etc... The limit seems to apply to the folders, not their contents. Does that make any sense? I have never used 4, but I know 5 is supposed to be far more flexible with the ability to edit styles and make changes. HTH!
ManiakMama
I wan to say the limit is 26 Styles. I too have found a way to get around it by grouping my styles together. Such as "Paper Styles", "Metal Styles" and you can still easily find which ones you are using by the way SG names the files!
Guest miss bumble
I asked that very question too Angie and this was her reply, I keep them all so I can recall the info at any time. This is pretty easy. - Go into your C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\layer styles folder. This is where your going to create your new folder. I would suggest this. Leaving everything that came with Photoshop as is. But let's say you want to do a "metal" folder. So you want everything that creates metal effects in there. You could get as technical as "silver" and just put silver ones in there. I would name it as this 1_Silver that way it's at the top of your list. Once you created the new folder and named it your going to bring all the .asl files in there. Not the whole folder..then you won't be able to see them..just the file itself. Copy it into that folder then reopen PSE 5. When you do your drop down list you'll now see 1_Silver as an option. When you choose it all your styles will be in there. What I would so is do a test folder. Name one, copy a few of the .asl files there..leaving the originals like they are. Reopen PSE and hold down the shift key so PSE can build the effects palette and see how you like it. You might find you don't like it that way..and I would hate for you to go through all of that and now like the results. Angie Hope that helps Coz Angie rocks. Julie - scrapaholic
Thanks for asking this question. I am not at a limit yet with my styles, but I think I will put my ASL's into folders such as metals and things, so I won't reach my limit.

This sounds like a really good solution but I can't find what Angie is referring to. I have searched right through PSE5 and can't find PhotoCreations\SpecialEffects\layerstylesfolder. I went to C:/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop Elements 05/ but the only thing I could find from there on in, was Presets/Styles - which is where I have my huge stash of Styles. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here? Thanks Vivvi

Guest miss bumble
Hi Vivvi Those instruction are PSE 5 using vista. I think the path your using is the one for XP? (but don't quote me on that.) What PC do you have.
Vivvi
Hi Vivvi Those instruction are PSE 5 using vista. I think the path your using is the one for XP? (but don't quote me on that.) What PC do you have. I am using XP. This is driving me nuts. The only place I can find for loading Styles in the Presets/Styles and while I can add more, I can't see them ALL to use them when I'm working in Editor. There are too many to fit in the drop-down/flyout window thingy. I tried creating a second folder and moving some into that but it just leaves gaps in that window thingy - what is left in the primary folder doesn't shift/move up. I do hope someone can help. Thanks Vivvi
Rose Ann
The place you're actually looking for is not the folder you're putting your styles in. It's this one C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\layer styles I use XP, too. If you can't find the Application Data folder it's hidden and you'll have to go to Tools>Folder Options>view to make them visible. Then put your style folders in and when you restart PSE, hold down the shift key so that it resets and you should have all your styles where they need to be. I usually have a scrollbar I have so many, but it lets me see them all. HTH

Vivvi
Rose Ann, I am so glad that you suggested the shortcut! I'd been having the heebie jeebies thinking about how I was going to remember how to find that folder again - and the path to it. (Even though I'd written it all down, I still would have to remember WHERE I wrote it...joys of old age, I guess..LOL) Now my shortcut is sitting on my desktop, thank to you. I have heaps of styles still in the presets but now I'm going to make folders and add them via the shortcut. Thank you once again for your invaluable assistance and willingness to share. Rose Ann
Vivvi, If you feel up to it while you're sorting your styles, I have a suggestion. Instead of making a folder for each one individually, try making a folder for each category like "glitter" "paper" and "metals" and then putting groups of styles in each folder. Then when you put the category folders into your Layer Styles folder, each time you select the Glitter title from the menu ALL of your glitters will be there at one time. When I got my new Laptop, I did that and I really like it. Now I don't have to remember names of individual thingies (speaking of old age....) or designers. Just post again if you need anything. Vivvi I while back I managed to get all my styles following the path Rose Ann suggested which has worked very well - until today. I had to uninstall my PSE5 and reinstall and now I cannot not only load my styles back into the same place, but I get a message that comes up "Could not load the styles because the scratch disks are full". My layer styles don't show up at all - they aren't even listed - in my effects. When I go to "Effects" a message comes up about a 'program error'. Help!!!! Has this happened to anyone else and is there anybody who can help me out here? I'm going on vacation and I want to take my laptop with me so I need to have all this up and working in the next day or so. Please - someone??? cricket331
When you reinstalled installed it did you have to maybe update it and forgot to install the updates?. Another suggestion is do a search on google about pse5 reinstall not working and see what comes up. Hope you get it working again soon, I know how frustrating it can be when something that was working stops and you can't figure it out:(.

Hope you get it working again soon, I know how frustrating it can be when something that was working stops and you can't figure it out:(. Oh no, I forgot to get the update...I hope it will do the trick. I did go into Adobe Help to see what I could find out about 'scratch disks' but it didn't help a great deal because I don't understand all the 'tech talk'. It suggested doing a defrag and I did do that. It said something about PSE could create two scratch disks (2GB each) but they needed to be in separate partitions or some such. I don't know how to go about that. I managed to reload about half of the styles but I had to keep adding two and taking out one each time and rebooting before it would rebuild the artwork and effects - and then it got to the point where the 'scratch disk is full' again! At that point, I went to bed. Two steps forward and one back is very tiring and frustrating. I can't understand how I had ALL of them in there previously and now I can only get half of my styles back in there! I'll go download the update and see if that makes any difference. If anyone else has any brilliant ideas, please share... Thanks
Rose Ann
Hey Vivvi, sorry you're having problems. The easiest explanation of scratch disks is that PSE 5 uses part of your hard drive as a place to swap files around, sort of like a substitute for RAM. I don't know much about it, but Angela Nussbaum explained it in a thread a while back. You can change the size of them through a menu in PSE. The one thing I found out though, was that if I didn't have enough free space on my HD, then PSE acted funny. So before I got my new laptop, I always tried to keep about 15 gigabytes of free space on the 40gb HD. It worked out better that way. I'll try to locate the thread about scratch disks for you. Hope the updates work.

Vivvi
Thanks Rose Ann. I am going to try to do it on the 2nd hard drive in my laptop and see if that makes a difference.
