Tripods are your friend........... seriously, use one. It makes a big difference!

It depends also what features your camera has. I would LOVE to get a good photo of the grand finale that's not blown out. I'll have to do some digging to know what shutter speed and f stop I need to use. :)

I have a minolta dimage z1 that I have used to take pictures of fireworks. I have found the easiest way is to set your camera to auto and if possible "continous" meaning that it will take several pictures at once for you. That way you are guaranteed to get a few good pictures. Make sure you are away from power lines and other light sources as it can confuse the camera. Also, you need to have a steady hand as some cameras for night pictures leave the shutter open for extended periods to gather extra light. If you are shaky, then your pictures will blur, bit it looks kinda cool though. Hope this helps.

My husband has taken some really nice fireworks shots. I know he puts it into manual everything, and I wished I'd checked the next time I picked up the camera and got lousy photos. :D

Ugh! I had a whole post ready to go earlier and it got eaten! Blah!

Use a tripod! It minimizes shake.
Also, use a remote shutter dohickee or a cable release (remote prefered) to minimize shake
Take photos of the kids lit only by sparklers (Check to be sure they are legal in your area, though)
Some P&Ss have a fireworks setting, or a night portrait setting - each will leave the shutter open longer to let in more light - and again, tripods are your friend.
If you don't have a tripod, make sure to steady yourself against a tree or building, and hold your breath while taking the photo.

When surfing the web for photography tips one day, I came across information on taking pictures of fireworks. Of course, I have no idea where that was now but googling "photography" and "fireworks" may get you to some helpful info.
