I am new to using these. I recently got PSE but I also have MacroMedia Fireworks MX. I've been able to do some things with brushes in Fireworks but I would like to become familiar with PSE.

I've admired many of the results of brushes, particularily on the following layouts (I've also uploaded the pictures, hopefully!):

the "Bea and Sam" layout on http://store.scrapgi.../product/13090/

the layout by Valerie Randall on http://store.scrapgirls.com/product/12809/...-Aloha-Hula-Sue

I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the light and dark pinks of the overlay! I think I can kind of figure out the AHS brushes: filling in with paper and changing the black line drawing to white. Is that the right approach?

I'm really excited about learning new techniques and am very good with computers. I recently received the Bamboo Fun pen and tablet and love both! I have no artistic ability (i.e. drawing, painting, dimension, etc.) to speak of, tho'. I love scrapping, both traditionally and digitally.

Before I begin, I must warn you that brushes are very addicting, lol!!

Overlays are great tools to have. When I use them, I usually place them over a paper that I'm using for the background. Then, I experiment with the blending modes in PSE and find the look I want. You can also change the color of the overlay using the paint bucket or a mask to achieve different looks, too.

Brushes are amazing. You can adjust the size, direction, opacity, color and so much more. Shalae Tippets has a wonderful ebook in the boutique that walks you through a ton of different techniques and uses for brushes. You can paint with them, use them as an eraser or use them like a rubber stamp (in paper scrapping). I always do my brushwork on a new layer in case I need to change something later on, too. It's been awhile since I've used PSE, so I don't remember where everything is located, but if you select the brush tool, a lot of the options I mentioned will show up in the top bar. I hope I've helped you a little bit!

Welcome to ScrapGirls! We're happy to have you here.

I would have to suggest to get this e book my Shalae Tippets Mastering Brushes for Photoshop Elements. She gives how-to's neat ideas and fantastic examples. There is a class using the book that runs a few times a year. Worth every penny.

Looks like Thao Did a colour overlay of pink and an outline of white on her Overlay template LO, I did a colour overlay of white and then faded the Overlay template back. I don't know how to tell you to make a colour overlay in PSE, it's real easy in PS.

(Welcome to Scrap Girls!)

Just talked to Angie (our customer service queen), she said in PSE, you can do a new color fill layer, then adjust the mode of it.

She also said she did a tutorial in the newsletter this week that might help you.
