My daughter is looking to buy a good camera to take with her on her year long internship. She had narrowed down her search to these two cameras. She has an Olympus 7mp point and shoot but would like a higher end one in case she needs pictures for her thesis.

Any one have any experience with either of these cameras?

I have the Sony H5 and absolutely love it (prior to that I had a small p&s olympus). I think the H50 has more bells (the smile capture and the night shot I dont have) and it has the adjustable LCD screen compared to mine, but I would definately recommend Sony. (My mom bought the Sony H9 and she is not a very high tech lady--she loves hers too). The only problem I have with mine is the older it gets (mine's about 4 years old), it seems to eat up batteries faster than it should. I just keep a couple extra sets with me.

Hopefully someone will come by with an opinion on the Olympus for you!

I have a Sony 1080 and absolutely love it. I don't know how this compares to the one you are looking or if it is in the price range you need. This camera takes great action photos and amazing macro shots.

My friend has a point and shoot Sony and the pics are great. In my opinion, you can't so wrong with a Sony.

Sony seems to have better reputation and better quality for the product. My husband has an olympus p & s that I hate, but hey its not mine and it suits his needs. I would probably get her an extra memory card and card reader (in case she would lose the cables) so she can upload pictures to her computer. Definitely get her rechargeable batteries and a recharger for them. My minolta chomps through batteries and so does my sister's canon powershot and I have about 20 double A rechargeable batteries that I keep charged and they are great to have. I never have to worry about my batteries dying because I know I have extras. If she has to use the camera cables to upload her pictures that sucks thelife out of batteries. Plus, in the long run they are cheaper than alkaline and you can recharge them at least 100 times. I still have batteries from 4 years ago that still work! HTH!

Yeah, that is one thing I miss on the Sony is the ability to use recharageable batteries. I haven't had a problem with battery power yet but I also have not taken it on vacation where I would be shooting all day. My Fuji had recharagable and it was a feature I loved.

I would recommend a Sony over and Olympus as well. The olympus takes special batteries and memory cards, unlike the sony that uses standard SD memory cards and usually AA batteries... My dad has an olympus and it takes great pics, but I don't think they are any better than my sony.

You might want to check out this recent article at PC Magazine. If you haven't worked at their site before, go to the bottom of the article and click on Print. That will bring up the entire article in a cleaner mode for reading, copying/pasting, printing.

Camera Info

I don't think there's a problem with giving this outside link since we're talking camera information.

Thanks everyone! She ended up getting the Olympus. It came with rechargeable AA batteries, a 2G card, card reader, camera bag, tripod and subscription to PC photo mag. It has auto as well as manual settings and uses the same card as her point and shoot as well as her dads camera. I will let you know how she likes it in a few months!
