Western Digital 320gb Ehd

Recommended Posts

I just got the walmart ad and it seems that Western Digital 320GB EHD is going on sale August 17th and I wanted to ask if this was a good deal. It's gonna be 80 dollars rounded up. It says it does not require n external power adapter so what does that mean? How can one use this with PSPxi and store everything on it from SG as well as photos? I know that PSP will still need to be on my main HD on the computer. This will be my first experience with an EHD.

Vaughnde,

Instead of a power cord it will probably draw power from your computer through the usb cord that attaches it to your computer would be my guess. On my ehd, I don't have the programs that I use for scrapping just my supplies, pictures and a back-up of all my school stuff. If you have a disc of your programs, you probably won't need to move them to the hard drive as you can re-install to your computer if you need to. One of my students builds computers and does computer help when needed and hates western digital products as he has had problems with them. When I needed a new hard drive for my laptop he recommended a seagate or maxtor hard drive. Even when he built a computer for my mom he refused to put a cheaper western digital hard drive in her computer even though it meant less profit for him. You may want to go to www.newegg.com and see what they have. Their service and prices are really good and you can see what other people think about certain products. This may help you to get an idea of what products seem to be glitchy and what ones seem to stand the test of time. HTH

Vaughnde, I did research Western Digital when I was looking into EHD's and put them at the bottom of my list.

They say they don't need extra power supplies, but they do IF you connect to a laptop. So, that's not always true.

They have also had some sync problems

I went with Iomga - bought through Costco on-line - similar price - now I didn't get one that large... mine is only 260 GB I believe... it's put away or I'd look but

It works great...

Easy to install and use.

Oh, I also did not back up my programs, only my Documents, and scrapbook elements...

I am backing up my SG supplies onto my Western Digital as I type this. Going cropping this weekend, and am taking the EHD with me. I have had no issues with the drive at all, and I love the size of it. I carry it with me to friends houses to crop too. I only put my pictures on it and my SG supplies. My actual program stays on my computers.

I plug it into the USB port and if I do take it with me, yes it needs a power supply.

I use that exact EHD on my laptop and have never had to use an extra power cord. I've loved it so far and haven't had any problems with it. I think I paid about $80 for it too.

I use the WD Passport 320. I love mine, and can move it between my laptop and desktop. What's more, with the ACDSee everything is tagged once and sorting can go between the two computers simply by swapping the EHD from computer to computer. (Had to tell it to this though).

I store my photos and all SG stuff on this, backed up by a SeaGate on my desktop. Works great and I am very happy with it.

I paid way more for mine. I paid 160.00 at Costco and thought it was a good deal. If this is the same unit for 80.00$, I'd say go for it.

We have had failures on several different brands of hard drive. We have LOTS of drives (dozens), and as a result more have had more failures. We have found no correlation between brand and failure rate. I think it is inherent in the product- hence the need to back-up. We have a friend in construction who says "Ice Cream melts, concrete cracks"-- and I would add "hard drives fail" to that. They just do!

Sounds like a pretty good deal. If you use a USB powered hard drive with your laptop, it will just use the battery faster since it needs to get its power from somewhere. And Vaughnde, since you aren't using a laptop, either type will be fine for you. (With or without a cord.) Happy shopping!
