Several of you have heard me sing the praises of kettlebells. Well, I'm so thoroughly convinced of the extreme effectiveness of this particular method of weight training that I wanted to share a little bit more info for those of you who may be interested in checking them out.

When I noticed that a friend of mine had started to lose weight around her midsection, I asked what she was doing and she shared her discovery of kettlebells. And that she had lost nearly 10 inches off her waist and hips in 1 month by doing the workout only 2-3x/week. Like me, she is in her early 40s and had had a hard time losing weight after the birth of her third child (which she had, like me, at 40). She Googled "weight loss after 40" and found kettlebells.

They're strange-looking weights that have traditionally been used by the Russians in training their special forces. This video will show you what they look like and give you an idea of some of the exercises you can do with them. I do that figure 8 in my workout but without the fancy throwing of the kettlebell! LOL

Why are they so effective? According to the research I've done, the off-centered weight of a kettlebell forces you to use more of your core, stabilizer muscles while working the targeted muscles through a longer range of motion. All I know is that doing the ab exercises at the end of the workout I'm doing with a 20# kettlebell feels AWESOME. The momentum of the kettlebell that you're lifting up actually *helps* you do the exercise--very cool!

I started doing the workout 3x week with a 10# kettlebell. After one week, I had lost 3 inches in my waist and hips. The day that I took those measurements, I promptly went out and bought a 20# kettlebell so my husband could start doing the workouts with me. The next day, we got up together to do the workout but because I remembered how incredibly sore I was for 2 days after my first workout, I took pity on DH and let him use the 10# while I attempted to do the workout with the 20# kettlebell. I was able to do the majority of the 14 rounds but there were several that I really struggled with. My 2nd and 3rd workouts that week were done with the 20# kettlebell, though, because even after just that one workout with the 20# KB, using the 10# just didn't feel like it was challenging enough anymore. I took my measurements again yesterday and have lost another 2.5 inches off my waist and hips, and lost 5 pounds (I actually had a 5 pound increase the first week so I'm back to where I started! LOL).

I'm still struggling to do some of the presses with the 20# KB but for the most part, I can now do the workout in the same way that I was able to do it with the 10# KB. I expect to stick with the 20# for a lot longer than I did the 10#. I'm not looking to bulk up, after all...just to burn fat and increase muscle mass which it seems is happening.

My posture has improved dramatically and I am noticing that I can actually *feel* my muscles now when I do things as simple as get out of my chair after sitting at the computer for a while. I'm just feeling strong, plain and simple. I've suffered from plantar fasciitis since the birth of my youngest son (2.5 years ago) and that has finally begun to go away, too. I don't believe that's just a coincidence.

The specific workout that my friends and I are doing can be found here, but there are LOTS of options out there if you decide you want to give it a try. You can probably find kettlebells in the weight training section of your local sporting goods store (that's where I found my 20#) and you can also buy them online.

If you decide to give them a try, let me know what you think! :)

Neat coincidence - I have been looking at these for a few days and wondered if they really worked! I need some firming up and could definitely use some strength training too. I was going to go back to Jazzercise (the one I used to go to moved closer to my home) but now that I'm working the class times aren't as convenient. I used to be able to go after the kids went to school but now the only classes they have that would fit my schedule are from 5 - 6:00 PM and I really think my family would like to eat dinner on a regular basis!

Thanks for posting this! I'm going to look into it further. I take it you like the "videos" this girl does? How long is a work-out? And will a workout fit in a small space - I'd like to hide. LOL

Cool, Mel. Never heard of them before, but it's right up my flabby alley! LOL! I'm interested in the answers to Janine's questions too.

Thanks for sharing.

I have wanted to do the kettle bell workouts but they are fairly expensive. I may break down and get them so I can use for my tennis team's conditioning. Several magazines has had kettle bell workouts (fitness, fitness rx, oxygen, shape and maybe prevention) you can probably google for some exercises or check amazon for dvd's. Most magazines recommended a 30 minute workout 2-3 times a week. You don't need a huge piece of space, maybe a 6x6 area. Some workouts have you do lunges and stretches using the bells. Basically, if you have an area big enough for pilates or yoga, you have room for kettle bells. Plus, you can take the kettle bell exercise outside on pretty days!

I do the workout in one of our downstairs bedrooms that we've designated for that purpose. The area I use is very small--probably 6 to 8 feet square--but you really don't need more than that. You can basically do it anywhere that you have enough room to stretch out your arms to the sides, straight above your head, and lie down flat on the floor. You can even do it outside, which is another one of the benefits of using a kettlebell. You only have the one KB that you need to take anywhere so any place is fair game!

The Beth Chamberlain/Anthony Deluglio video we're using has 14 rounds (plus 1 bonus--snatch test), each of which lasts 2 minutes. There's a one-minute break in between rounds so the total time to complete the workout is about 40 minutes. They tell you that you can skip the 1-minute breaks once you get the routine down but I've always been taught that you need that recovery period while weight training so I've kept doing it even though skipping it would make the workout slightly shorter. My heart rate doesn't slow down significantly between sets; I guess if you're at the point where yours would, you might get a bigger benefit from skipping them. I'm not an expert there.

The 40-minute workout goes really fast. The music is pretty cheesy and I'd love to have at least one other option but most of the DVDs that I've looked at are pretty expensive. Now that I have a solid set of exercises, I'll probably just choreograph my own routine to my own music when I get bored with this one.

Wow - they sound great!! I'm always good for a interesting way to help with weight loss -- and muscle conditioning. ;) Where do you buy these? Are they online purchase-only, or do they sell them in stores? I've honestly never heard of them. Would my DH, who is big into running & fitness, and who has always wanted a home gym, like these? He is always so skeptical of the "quick fix" solutions - but these look great!

You can purchase them online or at a store. I'm not sure where my friend originally ordered hers but I bought my 20# at Dick's Sporting Goods. I'm sure that other sporting goods stores would sell them, too.

Not sure if your DH would be skeptical of these or not. I was fortunate in that I saw the direct result of what they could achieve simply by looking at my friend who lost almost 10 inches in one month. I'm on track to do the same after losing 5.5 in two weeks. In the absence of knowing someone personally, though, I'd just suggest getting him to Google "kettlebells" to see the information that's out there. You can easily spend hours reading testimonials. :)

One other good thing about these is that the cost is relatively low compared to other things you might invest in for a home gym.

This YouTube video shows a woman using a regular dumbbell, a weighted plate, and a kettlebell to demonstrate that you can get a lot of the same benefits from using more traditional weights if that's all you have. As you'll see in the video, though, the kettlebell is definitely preferred in terms of the way it's made. There's something about the way your core muscles have to move in order to swing it around that makes it a killer workout for building muscle. I really can't say too many good things about it!

You may be able to use medicine balls with handles and get a similar effect, for those that can't find the kettle balls in their area.

Okay, Mel, I bought one of those scary looking kettlebells at Target. I'm a bit nervous as I don't want to drop it on my foot. I broke my left elbow a couple of years ago and my DH is a little worried that I won't be able to do this, but I'm determined to give it a try. My mid-section is my biggest self-esteem issue (at the moment). I think deep down that my DH just wants to try it for himself and he may not want to share. ;)

I'll let you know how it goes. :)

DH and I read & studied this link and info and bought a small 10# ball to start with. It really IS a vigorous workout,
and in only five min I was huffing and puffing (and I walk vigorously 3-5 x week!)

Have fun, ladies! Sweat with the oldies!

Let me know how it goes!

I am thinking I am a wimp and maybe should start with a 10 pound one?
