I know it is a military thing, but not sure what it means. I have seen homes in areas where I drive where there is a flag that hangs in the window. Some have a single star and some have a double star. Does anyone know what this means? I would do a search, but would not even know where to search since I dont know what to call it. Hope someone can shine a light on this one for me. TIA

I could be wrong, but---If I remember correctly, the stars on the window of a home means the family has someone in the military. Two stars means two in their family are serving in the military.

Some kinds of stars means the person is serving in a war, some mean they have died.

When my son was in Iraq, I also put an electric candle in the window until he came home.

Before I finished posting this, I just did a quick search and found this website which answers your question better than I did:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2...y_families.html

Hope this helps.

I have a single star poster hanging in my window for my son who is in the Marines. As far as I know it's a recognition of someone in the service.

It started during WWI. A blue star is for a family member in service. A gold star is for a family member killed while serving. This gave rise to the Gold Star Mother's Club. It's a service organisation for mothers who have lost a son or daughter, while serving in the armed forces. People had pretty much stopped hanging the banners after WWII. They came back with OEF, OIF.

What does OEF & OIF stand for. Thank you all for the clarification.

And the number of stars is the number of family members serving.
There are restrictions on who may display them.

My daughter is in the Army getting ready for her second deployment to Iraq. I've got the Blue Star Service Flag proudly displayed in the front window of my home. And, I'm a member of the Blue Star Mothers organization which is a group of military moms who support our kids, our troops, and each other.

From the ServiceFlags website ... There are restrictions ... The Service flag is authorized for display by Americans to honor their family members who are serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities whether or not they are present where the hostilities are taking place. And, they may be displayed by an organization to honor the members of that organization serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

It's great to see the interest and support of our troops. It certainly warms the heart of a very proud mother of a soldier.

Hi, just stumbled across this board...I have two blue stars, two sons in the Navy, one just back from Iraq and now in El Salvador battling the war on drugs out of Columbia and South/Central America. My other son is in Hawaii. I am so proud of both of them, as they have both been in the MidEast a total of four deployments each since 1991 (when it first started over there). Thanks for this board to acknowledge them.
