I'm seriously considering purchasing a wide format printer. My very first inkjet was a Canon and I was very pleased with it until it finally died a peaceful death from old age. I've had HP printers the past several years but haven't been overly impressed by the reviews I've read over at Amazon.

Creating Keepsakes had an article on the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and now I'm intrigued (particularly since Costco's printing can be hit or miss in terms of them getting the size right, etc.)

Does anyone have this printer and what do you think?

Thanks!

Well, I finally bit the bullet and bought the printer. It arrived this morning. I need to set up the area where it will live and that will probably take a few weeks. I have a whole lotta pages to print out and this will be the incentive I need to get a real home office set up! :dancingelephant:

I'll report back in when the printer is up and running!

I've been drooling over this model too. I have a Canon MP600. I purchased it last xmas before I began scrapping. It has been my best color printer to date. It also scans; which is a wonderful bonus. I like the cartridge replacement costs. But, I'm really considering the 9000.

Pls let us know your thoughts on it.

I have the Pixma 9000 and Love it. I print all my LO's out on it as well as photo's. The color and clarity is super. Have even printed a picture to frame and hang on the wall.

Last weekend I set the printer up as I needed it to do a project for work. Set up was quick and easy (though be sure you have a nice big area for the printer to live in... it's a BIG baby!).

After playing with it for a bit (just a minute or two), I figured out how to change settings to get a higher resolution print out. To be perfectly honest, I was pleased with the result but not blown away. I need to do a side by side comparison of a print out from the Canon at its "high" setting and from my HP at its "best" setting (the Canon doesn't seem to have a "best" setting or I just haven't found it yet). However, it's almost a moot point because my HP is limited to 8.5x11.

I've already been working on some large layout format calendars for 2009 (using Thao Cosgrove's awesome templates), and am looking forward to being able to print them out easily!

Another update: yesterday I played even more with the printer settings. Now I'm blown away. I had tried to print out the background for Erica Hite's adorable Advent calendar but it's a full bleed 8.5x11 page. So I then printed it out on the Canon. With the correct settings, it's just as good. I'm finally very happy with the purchase and can see that it will be getting quite the workout over Christmas vacation. Now if I could just afford the ink! (I did find a good price on Amazon though.)

I am so jealous! I do love the printer I have which is a Canon MP960 but, it doesn't do the 12 x 12 LO's! I print them at 8.4 x 8.4.

Congrats to you both! Enjoy!

I am seriously looking at purchasing the Canon Pixma Pro9000 MKII. I've previously used Epson printers and while I love the quality/color output I have been frustrated with clogged print heads (which equals no printing). One question I have about this printer is whether or not I would be able to feed 12 x 12 paper through to print on. I really like to print on cardstock and it's not clear to me if I am able to print on this size?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Oh I have this printer and love love love it!!! YUP!! YOU sure can!!! It prints poster sized papers, as long as you buy the paper in the size you want to print it! I've made posters for my son's room at college with this printer. I use Ilford pearl paper to print on and the pages for my albums come out looking so amazing I can't even stand it!!! This is the first time I've seen this thread or I would have commented on it earlier!!!

Sorry to trouble you but I have an additional question. Does this printer stop printing if the "low ink" indicator comes on? I was reading somewhere that some Canon printers will stop printing altogether if one of the ink colors is "thought" to be low. I would think that couldl be very frustrating!

Thanks again for any help you can provide.

I've never had this problem with my printer. It gives you plenty of warning when the printer is to be out of what ever color of ink, and I always keep printing until it tells me I'm out and have never had a problem with color or anything. :D

Interested to hear other thoughts on this ink question.

With my current HP, it comes up with a warning message when it ‘thinks’ it’s getting ‘low’ on ink. I have learned to just keep printing. It eventually comes up with the ‘low’ message again. Then, I can usually get at least 15 more pages out before it ‘visually’ shows that one of the colors is out. I may waste one sheet of paper, but I’ve gotten 30 to 45 additional pages printed from the first ‘low ink’ message—maybe even more since I’ve never counted how many between the 1st and 2nd message. So, being able to print until I determine the need to change the cartridges has been pretty cost-effective.

Does the Cannon operate like this? Can you keep printing until you ‘visually’ get poor color results?

With my Canon MP 830, I will get the msg that ink is running low but I keep printing and like you, usually get 10-15 more pages before it is really out, so I just ignore it til it starts showing signs of poor color. I would love to have this wide format printer though -

So, I guess the general consensus is that they want us to buy more ink before we really need it! LOL Well, we are on to them now, aren't we?

I have a Canon i9900 which I absolutely love. I've always ignored it until it actually says ink has run out and usually it has. Also, you can buy in at www.abcink.com I buy the 18 pk, it's only 25.95 and free shipping! I've been using it for well over a year now with absolutely no problems with color/print quality at all. In the 18 pack you get 3 of each of black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo magenta and photo cyan. I know I sound like an advertisement, but considering that each cartridge is 10+dollars at any store, this is a steal!! Happy printing!!
