TIFFs keep the photo high quality and most people (including myself) save their originals as TIFFs straight after they have either scanned or imported them. I've only ordered prints and not printed them out myself so those have to have a JPEG copy, because each time you save a JPEG it lowers the quality, that way you have the original to go back to.

When I do a LO I save it as a .PSD to start so that it preserves the layers and I can go back to the LO and change it easily if I want to. Then again I make a JPEG copy to get printed.

So saving as a TIFF or PSD will preserve the quality :D
