What a great Thread! I never heard of gratefull grannies until Sandi mentioned it to a newbie this morning!! Oh my what have I been missing!!
Anyhow....I became a grammy at age 41. Since Jon's mom was Nana right from the start (Abby is the oldest grandchild and only girl for now on their side) and since my parents are still very much in the picture they are called GG and Papa by the children (my grandchildren are their oldest great grands) so Bekah chose for me to be grammy which was fine by me. Now I have two other "adopted" grandsons that live here in the same apartment complex where I am call me grammy as well. My Children called my parents grandma and papa. My mom's mom while she was alive was GG (its now my mom's title), and my dad's mom was grandma. We all called our grandparents grandma and grandpa while growing up. Lost both grandpa's before we even started having children...Actually Grandpa Hathaway died when Bekah was 2. So she wouldn't remember him either. I'm enjoying being a grammy. If the children mispronounce my name, I wouldn't know it because I can't hear it

My grand & great-grandparents were all Granny (name) and Granda (name) ... on my mother's side is that - the ones I saw frequently. My mum's father and my father's parents were all Granny/Granda (surname) as they tended to be referred to rather than seen. My DH had one Grandma (and don't dare call her anything else, or else!!! lol) His parents were 40 when he was born and most of the grands had gone by then.
Our own children have Granny (name) for my side, and for great-Granny too when she was still here; and Granny (surname) for DH mother. No grandfathers - DH was 17 when his Dad died, and mine left us when I was almost 4. My MiL is SuperGran to my SiL's grandchildren! That may continue, but don't know.
As for us ... Grandma Isabel does sound rather a mouthful, so I wouln't be surprised if that gets shortened. Our nephew as a tot could manage Aunt Bel or Isabel but not both, so we'll see.
Will let you know what DH decides on when he finally accepts he's going to be a grandparent!! (I said elsewhere that he's still in denial and says he'll be Grandma's Husband
)

A friend of mine had a Granny Isabel and they called her Gizzy, it was cute and she loved it.

I too like reading what others call their grandparents.
Growing up, my grandparents were: Grandpa Charlie, and Grandma Darlene & Grandpa Bud (his nickname)...but to their faces they were simply Grandma or Grandpa...the names were how we distinguished them at home when they weren't present. I also had 2 great-grandmothers, and they were Grandma Meyer and Grandma Murray (last names, obviously).
We've sort of done the same thing with our children and their grand and great-grandparents.
I like what friends of ours did: Grandma and Grandpa are one set, and Grammie and Grumps (supposedly his own choice, and no, he's really not grumpy at all, lol) are their other set of grandparents. Grumps has to be the funniest Grandpa name I've come across!
