ok, I know this is going to throw you guys off, but this book is ALWAYS selling out at our local barnes and nobles. They say that they can not keep this book on the shelves long enough, but it is called:

Walter the Farting Dog...........By: William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray

Every kid I have read this to, LOVES IT! I wonder why? LOL

Our youngest DS would probably love those books, BUT we're trying to get him to stop using "potty words." I am not sure that reading about farting would help.

Its not author... but "monster at the end of the book" is a good one.. the one with grover? theres a sequal too.. has elmo in it... my toddler loves it so much. In fact i just took a video of her trying to read it by her self!

Ditto on Eric Carle - great for toddlers
One of our favorites around here is Skippyjon Jones, a little advanced for toddlers but such a fun story
of course Where the Wild Things Are is a classic favorite for us
Olivia, those stories are really funny and the illustrations are too

Anything by Sandra Boynton.
Some of hers come in board books, and some have accompanying songs. Snuggle Puppy and Pajama Time are my favorites.

My girls love, love, love, Where's my Teddy? by Jez Alborough and the sequels, My Friend Bear and It's the Bear (i think).
They also love a lot of the ones already mentioned as well as the If you give a Mouse a Cookie series by Laura Numeroff. She has a lot of these like If you give a Pig a Pancake, If you give a Moose a Muffin. These are favorites in our house.

I LOVE Sandra Boynton!!! I love "Barnyard Dance" and "Pajama Time"

She has really great rhymes and the illustrations are fun too!

That's all I can think of right now. We are book junkies and have turned our girls into junkies too! We got rid of lots of our toddler books before we moved though. I'll look around and see what I can find.

You have already gotten great suggestions so I will just add a few. If you will be sending them to daycare or even on the first day of Kindergarten, The kissing hand is great. Can't remember who wrote it. My kids' favs are the Max and Ruby books. Oh... Llama, Llama Red Pajama is awesome.

Our school district has partnered with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. My kids get a free book a month in the mail (for them to keep) until they are 5 years old. Check with your schools and see if they do that. It is a great program and all you have to do is sign up. They send great books every month. The boys LOVE to get mail so it is a win win.

I agree with anything by Sandra Boynton. And Shel Silverstein - we love "Runny Babbit."
Check out David Shannon - we can't get through a day without reading "No David". Also "Duck on a Bike". My DS LOVES those.
Also Audry Wood's books are favorites - especially "Piggies," "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub," "Silly Sally". Her Alphabet Adventure books are great too.
Ed Emberley's "Go Away, Big Green Monster" is a favorite.
Sally Cook's "Good Night Pillow Fight" is fun to read.
"The Dot" and "Ish" by Peter H. Reynolds are FABULOUS!!!!!
Any of the "Five little monkeys" books by Eileen Christelow are fun

There's a start. Can you tell that we love going to the library? My daughter is 5 and my son is 2, so we actually get more girly books...my son likes them too. You might check out "Princess Justina Albertina" by Ellen Dee Davidson Charlesbridge just for a laugh... DD didn't like it, but DS thought it was funny. So did DH and I.

Kudos to moms reading to children! Your hard work and loving attention to this will benefit your children so much. Instilling a love of reading in your children is so important--I was a high school English teacher a long time ago, and when I would notice that a student would write particularly well, I would ask if they enjoyed reading. Almost, without exception, the good writers were readers also.

Jim Trelease's "The New Read-Aloud Handbook" was a wonderful resource for me when my children were small. But at first our library often did not have the recommended books--so I shared the Trelease book with our librarians, and they started buying the books for the library; it worked out really well.

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sandra Boynton books here. We have two of them that I sing to each of the kids, too. "Snuggle Puppy" is Isaiah's song/book and "Personal Penguin" is Janae's. On Personal Penguin there is a link available to hear Davy Jone's sing it. Janae likes my version better, though.

We also love Karma Wilson's books (Bear Snores On, Bear Wakes Up, Bear Wants More, etc). At Christmas time, we especially love "Mortimer's Christmas Manager" or something like that. It's super sweet, the illustrations are beautiful and I usually tear up when I think about the message. Worth every penny to own.

I LOVE children's books. We have tons. I have a membership to Barnes & Noble and I think I spend a LOT more on books for my kids than for myself.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

You've gotten a ton of recommendations that include many of our favorites but I'll add one more: The Wide-Mouthed Frog. The edition we have is a pop-up book and the boys LOVE it. Super cute.
