Hello,
I'm quite new to digital scrapping and to PSE4, I've just about grasped the basics but having purchased a couple of the SS page templates- layered tear it up and layered torn circles, Iam totally baffled again!!
I've read the instructions but i'm afraid they don't seem to help, for instance in the torn circles I have a white circle and a grey one, what are they and how do I use them, I haven't got a clue.
I'm so frustrated cos' the layouts done with them look so good and professional, can someone help, pleeese??

Hi Nicola and welcome! I haven't seen the torn circle templates, but I have used the layered tear it up. I can tell you that most of the work has been done for you. Basically the white template is the ACTUAL piece you will use in your layout. This is your "edge" to your torn piece of paper. Now to get that torn piece of paper...that is where you use the grey one. There are a few ways to do this. One way is to drag that grey layer onto your layout as well as the paper you want to tear from. Then take the magic wand and "select" the grey area of the template. Now, go to the layer with the paper that you want to cut from. Do a copy and then a paste. Now you have your torn piece of paper. Turn off the layer with the grey template, drag over your white template, place that layer BELOW the one you just cut, and move it into place so it looks like the actual "tear" from the paper.

Hi Nicola,

If you open the pngs with the word "composite" in the file name, you'll see how you can layer up the included pngs. The pngs are in different shades of gray and white so that you can see the different shapes if you drag them all into a document. The white shapes, if I remember can be used to show the tear. So if you drag the gray circle on top of the bigger white circle, and center it, the white torn shape will look like the tear. Kind of ends up looking like if you had a printed piece of white paper, and then tear it, you'll see the white rough edges of the paper. I hope I'm making sense.

Do you know how to make a clipping mask? I use Photoshop, but maybe someone here that uses Photoshop Elements can guide you a little better. There is some information in the Scrap Girls University about clipping masks. Also Ro has kick-butt tutorial videos on PSE in the boutique.

Hi Nicole..Theresa is correct in her explination. Basically the white circles or strips is what will end up being the "tear" What I usually do is this.

I will drag my pattern paper on top of the grey template. Then by holding down the "control" key and pressing "G" this will cover that grey template, then merge the 2 layers. Then you will need to drag your white tear under your pattern paper. Once you get this placed then once again merge the pattern paper layer and your tear. After all these layers are merged you can then drag your strip or circle onto your layout.

Thank You so much everyone, your replies have really helped,
I had a bit of trouble getting the last bits to merge, after I had added the white torn bit, when I tried to drag the whole lot onto my paper some of it was getting left behind!!, I'm still getting my head around this layers thing!. Also when I move the white tear beneath my torn circle it doesnt show up around the edges, I have to make it larger first using the free transform, is that normal?

glad your getting the hang of them Nicola. As for the white fitting underneath, it's made to fit just right, but if you don't have it lined up correctly you might run into this problem. Since it's under your pattern paper when your lining it up it's kind of hard to see. You might try lowering the opacity of your pattern paper layer until you get everything just right then raise it back to 100%. Or like you did use the free transform to make it a little larger. By doing it that way you can also play around with the 'tear' to get some different looks. Maybe put a larger tear on one side of the cirlce and smaller on the other side.
