I notice when I bring my photos from my digital camera into my PSE5 that they are 36 inches x 27 inches and 72 dpi. I've just been dragging them onto my usually 12x12 (sometimes 8x8) layouts and dragging the corners to resize. Occasionally I crop a photo and tell the program to use certain dimensions and dpi.

Am I getting as good quality prints just dragging my 72 dpi 5 megapixel photos over to my 12x12 layouts as I would if I were to resize them (and increase the dpi) first?

How do you all add your photos to your layouts?

Not that I'm an expert like many on here, but my cents worth is that I take my dpi up to the same as the background paper (equal quality when printed out is my reasoning behind that) and then resize accordingly.
But I have done LO's with my usual 72 dpi onto a 200 (or whatever) and it's been fine.

In photoshop, when you drop your huge 72 dpi photo into your 300 dpi 12x12 page, it changes the resolution to that of the page, so it reduces the dimensions while retaining the same quality. I don't bother changing it before hand because I don't have to.

(Well, sometimes I do if I'm putting it in 4x6 and I know I'll want it fairly small so that I don't have it so much bigger than my document.) I've noticed that not all of our cameras are the same either. I'm pretty sure one of them takes them at 300.

I was going to suggest that in addition to what the others have said, you might check the resolution and size settings on your camera. To get the very best quality, set it on the the largest and highest resolution possible. That's usually L and SuperFine. That being said, all cameras do not shoot in the same resolution, but a 5 megapixel should shoot in at least 180 dpi.

A lot just depends on the camera - my nikon took pictures at 300dpi, but it was then a smaller picture, my canon I think is 72dpi, but the dimensions are huge - in the end, its the file size that matters, when you drop a photo on a 300dpi layout, it will resize itself to 300dpi.

Wow, you all really know your stuff. I'm thoroughly impressed.

I had no idea that PS resizes the photo automatically. I've been shooting with a 5MP camera and took the settings to Superfine & L because I wanted the best look.

I'm glad I now have more info other than "I want the best I can get".

When I grow up, I want to be as smart as y'all.
