We did this when my parents were going to have their first grandchild. Mom wanted to be called Nana since that's what she called her beloved grandmother. We soon learned that the adults have no say in what the grandparents are called. The first grandchild will dub them whatever he or she chooses and that is what will stick and be loved because it came from the grandchild. My parents are now MeMaw and PaPaw b/c that is how the first grandchild interpreted grandma and grandpa. Now, 8 grandchildren later, nothing has changed.

It will be interesting to see how you're grandchild names you!

If we are not too late, you might like to try Nana and Tata. I waited years for the title of Nana, and now I am! Our dd-i-l found a "#1 Nana" charm for me (knowing I love meaningful jewelry). It was important for me to have a name our grandchildren could pronounce. My wonderful mom dreamed of being Grand Mama Dee Dee and is grammie because the kids just couldn't get it out. So we call her by her chosen title in print (like scrapbook pages).

Trying for 200 by the end of the month. And still hope for some encouragements, too?

Bobbie, what was the final decision? I noticed you've said grammie once or twice. I love that, that's what Vaughnde is. I am so glad I'm Nana. I just love it. I'm not so sure its going to stick with Julianna though. Ray and Brianna seem to want to call me grandma. whatever, it still means love.

Funny, this subject came up again with my family. We were keeping Dominik (GS) St. Patty's day and we spent the evening at BIL and SIL house (we watched Darby o'Gill and the Little People - you should have seen Dom dancing with the leprechauns!). Dom is now connecting words with their meaning - whereas before he was just speaking jibberish) and is repeating words for us. He associates "pop pop" with his other grandpa. He says "nana" but that means banana. I was trying to get him to say "gram - meesha" or just ' meesha" for me, but he never caught on before he went home.

Love the site! I just forwarded it on to my DS and DIL and also my DH. I am going to be a grandma for the first time in about 5 weeks. I think Jennifer is right about us not really having much to say in the matter but that doesn't mean I can't try, right?

How I started trying to get the kids to call me Nana was to refer to myself as that. Every time I held a baby I'd say stuff like "Nana loves you" and "come to Nana", "give Nana hugs and kisses" etc. They just always heard it and so nothing else has come up. Even my DILs call me Nana. None of them really want to call me Mom and yet they want something a little more familiar than that. So I'm just Nana to the world I guess. I've had worse jobs and titles. LOL
