2nd Subscription With Carbonite

Recommended Posts

I got tired of trying to figure out what to do about backing up my supplies and photos.

I have Carbonite backing up my desktop already. But now I have this laptop. Any new supplies in the past 2 months have gone to the laptop and not the desktop. Since the desktop has PSE4 on it. It can't handle the PSE7 that's on the laptop. And any pictures from the past 1.5 months is on the laptop and not the desktop.

So...move over the Carbonite subscription? And have to move EVERYTHING from the desktop to the laptop? Ugh!

Nope...just add a 2nd subscription for the laptop. I caved in and did it!

Wonder how long it will take? Couple of weeks. lol

It started last night and says it has done 1.2GB and has 35.2GB to go.

Hmmm...I have my main ScrapGirls folder. And a smaller SG folder of newer items. The main one is also on the desktop and is already backed up. Maybe I should stop the back up for now (on the laptop) of that main SG folder so it can get the newer, smaller SG folder first and the photos that are on the laptop. Then it can start on the big SG folder after that.

Off to change some settings....

Ack! New plan! lol

To go to every SG folder within the big SG folder and to tell it NOT to back it up...takes way too long.

And to go to the smaller newer items SG folder and have to open the folders and highlight the files and tell it to back up right away...still too long.

lol

But, I did go to my photos and highlight the pictures and tell it to back them up right away...which it's already doing. Then it can get back to work on the SG stuff.

Mine had about 30 GB and it took 40 days (sounds biblical - LOL) I did notice that it backs up the small "easy" files first; so you have to tell it to back up the ones you want priority like you did w/your pics.

I also have VONAGE and it interfered a bit w/that, so sometimes I had it off or on low priority, but it still took awhile. Depends on your upload speed.

I plan to leave it on...

but do I need to go in and change a setting so that it doesn't "go to sleep" after 15 minutes (or whatever it is set at)???

Or will the backup happen even while "asleep." I don't think so.

I find that go to sleep setting so frustrating. I have it turned off all the time. If I want my laptop to go sleep I close the lid, LOL! At least it now has the important stuff backed up!

I did leave mine running all night and I had the same "concern" Charlene, so I left my lid open about 1 inch - LOL.

I just checked...it's set to go to sleep when the lid is shut. That's fine.

But I changed it (for now) to "never" go to sleep when sitting idle. (lid open) The screen can go to sleep but not the computer. After the intitial backup is done, I can change it back.

3.6GB (2,459 files) done

33.2GB (27,083 files) to go

lol

I'm glad you started this thread, Charlene. It made me realize that I'm being very "dumb" about my new laptop lol. I've been doing everything BUT scrapping on it because it was so slow trying to use our wireless network router and I just got the Carbonite backup when there was all the chatter about it on the messageboard. So I wanted to keep everything on the desktop where it was being backed up. I realize I'm just going to have to bite the bullet so to speak and get another subscription for the laptop. :) I don't suppose there are any "deals" for a second household subscription??

I didn't find any deals. Well, not really. Maybe. lol

If you google "carbonite coupons" it will pull up all sorts of stuff for you. I clicked on some. But, I don't "know" those sites. They would say, click here to subscribe (to Carbonite) for "whatever" price. I just don't trust places I'm not familar with. :dunno: I did see a coupon I could copy and paste...but it was actually for the same amount that Carbonite had anyway, so I didn't use it. Maybe if I dug around more I could have found something. Len (the Carbonite rep that's around here at SG) told me a week or two ago that the offer I had used on the desktop which gave me a few free months wasn't available right now.

So, while on my laptop, I went to the carbonite site and pulled up my account and added another computer/subscription. It didn't let me name (not that I saw) the computer...I would have called it HP Laptop or something...it called it Owner-PC.

I was tired of putting it off and trying to figure out whether to just cover one computer or both.

So...now my laptop is covered for the next 2 years!

The desktop subscription has about 3 months left. I'm SURE I'll be renewing.

I remembered reading a thread here on SG about a discount for Carbonite if you entered through this website. I didn't know if it would work since we already have a Carbonite subscription on our desktop, but I tried it and voila! It did. The savings are biggest with the three year subscription so that's what I did.

Now I just have to figure out what you guys are talking about with the laptop "sleeping" lol.

Ah, good for you!

You know how if you don't use your computer for a while, it "goes to sleep?" You just move the mouse or touch the touchpad and it "wakes back up." Well, when it's "asleep," I don't think the internet connection is still going. But, I'm not sure. Just in case, I set mine so that it does NOT go to sleep when I'm not using it. Unless I shut the lid down. After this intitial backup is done, I'll change it back to normal settings. I did leave it set so that the monitor/screen shuts down after 10 minutes or something if not in use...but not the whole computer.

I'm almost at 30%. :)

I did go into the folder that contains the more recent SG supplies...I kept them separate 'cause I knew they were not on the desktop which is fully backed up and I haven't put them on a DVD yet...and told it to start right away on much of it. I just wish you could click on a folder and tell it to back up right away. Instead, you have to open it up and do so for the files. At least you can highlight all of the files and right click.

But, it's plugging along.
