This year I resolved to run a 5K. I've never run any race ever (unless pathetic laps in HS P.E. count). Last night I looked in the mirror while changing into my PJs (why would I want to look?), and was appalled by the pudge around my middlet...I've NEVER had that before (barring pregnancy :)). So today I found a site to guide me in training for my 5K, mapped a route to start on and track my progress, and headed out the door to run/walk as scheduled. I'm so excited!!! I found a great 5K in my area at the beginning of May (perfect timing for training) sponsored by Girls on the Run (check them out. They are totally cool!). As soon as I clear the date with DH, I'm paying my fee to commit me to the process!!!

YIPPEE! I can't wait! Not only will I be accomplishing my resolution, I'm gonna do something I've wanted to do for a few years AND GET RID OF THE PUDGE!!!!!

WOO HOO!
Debbie

Go, Debbie, Go! I've thought about something like this but my knees often bother me so I fear to go there.

Go Debbie! Go Debbie! Go Debbie! DH and I trained for a 5K last year using a website called something like From Coach Potato to 5K. :D
This year we're training to run a 1/2 marathon as part of the Rock & Roll Marathon in San Antonio in November.

How 'bout if we support each other in our efforts? I really don't enjoy running that much, but DH wants to give this a try, so I figured, why not?

We've been running on every warm day that we get, which isn't many so far, of course. Last Thursday we were able to run 3 miles. I was very impressed with myself. LOL This is all thanks to the working out I've been doing all along, so I was thrilled to see how much better I did than the 5K last year. (I ended up not being able to run the whole thing.)

Anyway, I'd love to support each other! :)

You're on, Jan. I'm using the Couch Potato to 5K, too!!!! LOL! I'm a little better than couch potato...but not much :D I'm planning to do some strengthening work on "no-run" days.

I'm so impressed that you're going for a 1/2 marathon. Maybe next year for me! And how cool that you could run 3 miles last week! :worthy:

You go too, Jan!!!

You go girls!!!!! I used to do 5k runs in a former life about 30 years ago. Then in the Army had daily 2mile "fun runs-NOT" and kept getting stress fractures. I'm ok with a good brisk walk, but my poor old tibias just don't hold up to the running anymore. Getting old is not for sissies. I love how Jan has been working out. You all ought to go check out her Coach Jan site.
Debbie, all I can say is RUN!!!!!

How did your run/walk go the other day, Debbie? What kind of temps do you have outside now? I hate running in the cold, so we wait until we have nice days. It's supposed to be in the 60s here on either Friday or Saturday, so we're going to run on one of those days. I'm hoping to do at least 3 miles again, if not closer to 4.

I'll let you know how it goes. :)

Debbie, I had a similar experience about looking in the mirror and wanting to get rid of the belly pudge. Your post is so timely. I googled running programs for beginners 2 weekends ago and found the couch to 5k plan and have been following the plan for two weeks now. I run on a treadmill at work, which works out great (no weather issues) and it's a great way to break up my work day. I'm feeling better already and can't wait to see the payoff to my hardwork. I hope you do too! Good luck with your goal. Run Debbie run!

Way to go Debbie! I hope you have great success.

I started on a plan of sorts as well at the end of January. It's slow going but I can already see some results - I've lost 5lbs! I'm just at a brisk walk, with a little running in and hoping to increase it as I go. Not sure if I'll ever be at the point to take part in a run but I'm hoping I'll get in good shape.

Jan, my run/walk went well. I ran a little longer than the 60 sec recommended (I did 90 sec...watch out! LOL!) alt with the 90 sec walk. I have a great loop in our neighborhood that is 0.6 miles. I did 3 loops in my tim out. I'm a "go out too strong" kind of person and often burn. So my biggest challenge is going to be sticking to the pace of the plan. I looked at the beginners plan, but that was a bit too aggressive for me. Our weather is highly variable. Yesterday was sunny and about 50 when I was out. There was a brisk wind though. I used to run outside in Alaska in the spring, summer, and fall when it was quite a bit chillier than it is here. I'm not afraid to run in cooler weather.

What do you do on your off days, Jan? I'm doing some basic conditioning with a simple program ("Shape Up") I got through SavingDinner.com. It's another slow-but-steady, low-tech program that I've used before with good success. I can do it in the living room in just a few minutes on my off days. Works for me.

Can't wait to hear about your runs this weekend!
Debbie

Woo Hoo, Heather! Care to join me in a 5K in May? Our area has lots (Memorial Day is a big race day) and I bet Central Ohio does too. (BTW, I've lived in Worthington, Grove City, Washington Courthouse, and Dayton in my lifetime :) ). Might be fun to spur each other on!

WTG! Keep up the good work.

Tonya, that's great! 5 lbs gone and muscle gained! I too am looking to be in much better shape. <<whispering>>....this great obsessive hobby I have called digital scrapbooking has not been helpful in my overall fitness...I do a LOT more sitting these days!

<<clears throat>>

It's so encouraging to hear of your success! Keep us in the loop!

I am so impressed with people who can commit to running. Me? I am a cycling kind of girl, so my exercise of choice in the winter is spin class 3xs a week. Keep us posted on how the training is going - pacing yourself is so important - and so hard to do.

I did some searching and found a 5k run on Mother's Day, 5/10. I would love to do it and think that's just the extra push I need to continue with my plan. I've never done anything like this before and can't imagine how satisfying it would be to accomplish something like this. Let's do it!! I'm in Canal Winchester (just east of Grove City) and work in Dublin. I'm familiar with all of the areas you've lived in Ohio. I'm headed into the workout room now for today's run/walk.

WOO HOO! Heather...we're running our first 5K! So excited!

BTW, DH is going to be out of town the weekend of the 5K I want to do. <<sigh>> There is one the week before, but it's a trail run, and I don't think that should be my first foray into the world of 5K since I'm training on the road. There are a couple the following week and of course, Memorial Day weekend. I'm kind of bummed. I'm thinking about how to be creative so I can run this race. Maybe a friend could take the girls to the race for me. I really want them to be there especially since there will be younger girls running there. But I kind of wanted DH there too. <<sigh again>> Guess I need to think a little longer on this.

Glad you're joining the 5K fun!

Wow! Look at all of us going for our goals! That is so great! Heather, I think it's awesome that you're going to do a run, too!
Tonya, just getting out there and moving is a step in the right direction. And like you said, you're seeing results, and that's the coolest thing! It makes it all worth it, IMO!

Sue, DH and I love to bike, too, and can't wait for the warmer weather to come back so we can do that, too. We also love to kayak and in fact, our kayak is the kind that you pedal like a bike rather than paddle like a traditional kayak. Again, looking for the warmer weather for that, too! :D

Debbie, I've been working through various Beachbody programs since DH and I made our lifestyle change last June. At this point, we're doing one called ChaLEAN Extreme, which is an intensive strength training workout. The whole basis is that muscle burns fat, so as we build muscle, the fat burns away. The more muscle your body has the higher your metabolism runs. It also burns higher all day, rather than just the high burn you get while doing cardio which goes back down once you stop whatever cardio training you do. I'm down 25 pounds since I first started my journey back in June. I have about 15 more pounds to go, but am sad to say that the scale hasn't budged very much since I've been doing ChaLEAN Extreme. I think that's because I'm building so much muscle, tho. Oh, and I try not to pay too much attention to the scale, because there are so many variables involved with how much one weighs. I pay attention to how my clothes fit and my measurements. I have gone from a large size 10 (that's my way of not really admitting I was probably size 12, but since I only wore stretchy 10s, who knows! LOL) to a size 6 heading into a size 4. I'm thrilled, to say the least! :D I'll be finishing up ChaLEAN Extreme this week (3 month program) so I'll be doing my final measurements and photos this weekend probably. I'll post those here for inspiration! :)

You guys are really inspiring me. Since I'm leaving for vacation Sunday, I will not actually start a new program until the following week. I'm ordering my beachbody program so it will be here when I get home (I hope). Jan's got me all prepared. I took before photos yesterday. facing that was a really hard thing to do, but I think it sunk in a lot deeper than just getting on the scale. I did wear a pair of jeans, comfortably, that I couldn't fasten a year ago.

Debbie, I think that's a great idea to have a friend bring the girls to the race so they are there with you. I'm sorry you DH will be out of town for that one. Hopefully, your friend will also bring a camera to capture the day on film so you can share it with him afterwards. I too, want my DH and DD's to be there when I run my 5k. My girls are too young to understand, but part of the reason I want to do this is for them - I want to be the best role model I can for them, which includes taken care of my physical self.

Jan, great job on reaching you end of your program. And that's awesome...to now be approaching a size 4. Keep up the great work. What's next for you?

Sandi, congrats on preparing for your program and for taking those dreaded before photos. As I was working out today, I was thinking I should do that myself. Wouldn't be great to see all the layouts in the gallery of us all achieving our individual goals?!

Heather, I agree, the support here is so helpful. I know there are support boards on other sites, but this is more important to me because you are all my friends. But I will not post the before photo until after there's at least some difference. But I have it printed out in my little 4x6 album I'm making about my struggles, sucesses and, yes, failures. I have to show the failures too, in order to be true to myself and not allow denial to be a reason to stop me.

Keep up the good work ladies. I need to finishing printing my parent newsletter for tonight's Daisy meeting and head off to do my 3 mile walking DVD. (Okay, I admit it, I am reading the board, also, which is slowing me down.)
