I'm having a slight problem in nudging an object using the arrow keys. It seem that once I add an effect to an element (shadow etc) in my layout, if I try to nudge it with the arrow keys, all that happens is that the effects change from one effect to another. My selected item does not move and I have to move it with my mouse. Annoying, especially when I want the item to stay at the same height on the layout and just nudge it left or right a little.

In PSE5, I don't think I ever had this problem, and unfortunately that version is on my home computer and not my laptop.

Has anyone else experienced this and know how to solve this problem.

Also, in PSE5 when you wanted to make your layout smaller or larger, all you had to do was spin the mouse wheel. In both PSE6 and 7, you have to use Cntrl and either the + or - key. And it doesn't do as good a job as PSE5. I don't know why they always have to change 'good' things when they do their upgrades.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Carol

Not sure if this will help or not, but make sure you have your layer highlighted and that you are using your move too (or at least it is highlighted.) I had it scrolling through effects last night too, and this is what I had to make sure I did!

HTH!

That's what I was thinking, Kim. Sometimes I end up doing things in the tool option bar instead of what I think I'm doing. It happens the most when I've just finished using a tool that requires that I confirm before I move on. Once I confirm, I can click "v" and get back to my move tool.

Hope you get it figured out, Carol!

Ditto the others, I've that same problem as well and have had to play with the move tool to get it off of the Effects Palette.

I have this problem all the time - I have to hit CTRL-T (transform) and then I can use the arrows to nudge. HTH

Thanks for the help gals. I'm going to try them all and see what happens. Doesn't that drive you nuts when something like this happens. I thought that I had my layer selected and I checked and it was, but still only the effects changed. No nudging of the layer. As Vaughnde would say, crikey.

Thanks again.

The other way to get the nudge to work is to click on the corner of the "bounding box" when you're using your move tool.

Ladies, I'm totally frustrated. I have tried all of your suggestions, several times, and it doesn't work. The effects are still changing, but my selection is not moving. I give up.

If anyone else out there in SG land can lend me a hand, I'd be forever grateful. PSE5 never gave me such problems as PSE6 or 7. Once I'm back home, I'm going back to PSE5.

hmmm - CTRL-T usually does it for me.....I have to have the move tool selected as well. Not sure what to tell you, Carol; I'm sorry you're frustrated. I know I don't ALWAYS have to do that, sometimes nudge just works on its own. Not sure if it's after I've used a style/action that it becomes inactive or what. Maybe you could google it as well?

I can't help any more about the nudge problems than anyone else, but I do know how to fix your scroll wheel zoom problem.
Got to Edit>Preferences>General. Once the box opens look in the options square. There is a list there. Some will be checked and some unchecked. The very last option is "zoom with scroll wheel" check this box and hit ok. You should then be able to zoom with the scroll wheel. The default is unchecked for both PSE 6&7, but once checked it will stay that way.

Sara, you are an angel. Thanks for your help with that pesky problem. I did it and it works. WAHOOOOOOOOO!

Now if I can only figure out how to get the nudging to work. I'll check with the help section of PSE6 and see if there is anything there that will help. I doubt it, the help sections are usually helpless.

Thanks again.

When you try to nudge, do you have the move/transform toolbar at the top of your screen (the one where you can enter in your % to resize). If that tool bar isn't up there, it doesn't seem to work. The easiest way I've found to get it to work for me is to click on the transform tool (the little arrow thing at the top). When I've got that tool picked, there should be a dotted line around the layer you're working with (I think it's called a bounding box). If you hold your mouse over the corner of the bounding box, your cursor should change into a little diagonal arrow. If you were resizing, its the same place you would click and drag. Now, just click on the corner, but don't drag it. That should bring up your tool bar across the top. Once it's there, then the nudging should work.

Try just clicking anywhere on your layout. Most of the time this works. It kind of gets PSE6 out of the 'blend mode'. If this doesn't work, like Sheri said, click on the Move tool, then click on a corner of your layer. That always works.

Thanks for the reminder on how to reset preferences. Had to re-do mine recently, and it was lots of trial and error to get it right!

I have a new laptop, and miss my scroll wheel for zooming.
I've totally forgotten how I did it before! Would it make sense to use a mouse with the laptop (only for scrapping), or have you all found that to be a pain?
Nancy

I always use a mouse with my laptop. I can't stand that little square and trying to move and get the pointer to stay put. Takes too long and then the stupid pointer moves anyway. Grrrr! So I take my mouse with me everywhere. Don't care that people stare and think I'm crazy. At least I'm not cursing up a blue streak and I can get my work done faster with my mouse

Got the nudging thing fixed, don't ask me how, but I did. But I'll keep those instructions handy for the next time it happens.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I'm a pen tablet person. If I am not planning on doing major scrapping then I'll bring my mouse, but I usually have my tablet with me. I even figured out how to turn off the touchpad when my tablet or mouse is plugged in, just so that I don't accidentally bump it with my wrist or something. I don't use the touchpad if I can avoid it.
