Frames...

Recommended Posts

OK all you creative Scrapgirls. I am looking for your best ideas on how to use frames. Weird I know. "Isn't it obvious" you say. To me- no :) I put my picture, I put my frame and then thats it! I get stuck every time! I have no idea on how to embellish with a frame or even how to pick one so that it doesn't overpower my photo.

I am in need of frame help.

How do you pick and use your frames??

I rarely use "busy" frames - usually a simple stroke or a frame that looks like an old time photograph. Usually I will layer stuff under the frames, like a piece of notebook paper or some brush work.

To embellish, maybe you can "fasten" your frame down with something interesting, like photo corners, staples, or brackets.

One thing I sort of think about and sometimes do is go back the the basic old traditional paper scrapping, that thing I learned first.....the mat. When I get stuck I try to find a coordinating or contrasting paper to stick behind the photo. Basic, yes, but sometimes that gives you better options for layering embellishments on top. If I use a pre-embellished frame, like the clusters in some kits, I can usually find some way to personalize it or just leave it, but I do have trouble coming up with similar effects on my own. Just a little more advanced than I am at this point. If I use a fancier frame, I make it and the photo the focal point and keep the embellishments simple and in the background.

OK- so then- can you let me see em?? Can you all point out some fabulous layouts with "actual" frames? I am all about the mat and stroke- but to use a wood frame or a lace frame, a non-paper looking scrap frame is so hard for me! Keep it coming ladies!!! I have lots in my stash and want to dig em out!

Kim, I don't have time to stop right now to go look, but I know Angie Briggs has some of the really nice clusters in a fairly recent collection and I think Brandy Murry does too, I just saw some in the stash last night I want to use. I used a nice one from the persimmon collection yesterday. I'll break into the stash tonight and send you some links if no one else gets to it first. Do you have any particular thing in mind, or just general stuff?

Frames? Did someone say frames?

:)

I love frames.

I don't always use them...but I sure do like them.

Okay...some examples? I'm not claiming that these are fabulous...but they are some examples:

tissue frame

metal frames (from Ro's chain gang)

made this frame

acrylic swirl frame

jeweled frame

clustered things on this frame

layered things over/under this frame

tucked this frame/picture amongst the swirls

ribbons dangling from frame

bow around double frame

so many frames...for Dad

so many frames...Mom

:)

Yep, I like frames.

I'm sure some fabulous examples will come along.

Let me see what I can find. I don't use those kinds very often.

Ok, Here's something I did a while back. To embellish this 3-d frame, I placed a flower cluster and made the shadows high. I don't really like the shadows, I've become better at it since, but you get the idea.

In this one, I just left the frames alone.

Left this frame alone too.

I really like the look of wrapped frames too. with ribbons or rubber bands.

I knew you all would come to my rescue! Its the shadows!!! That's what throws me on 3D frames! I love it when the clusters are built onto the frames, but still get stuck. I love all of the examples you gave me. THANKS!

scrappinchar, you may be my new hero! Very nice work.

I'm not a big embellisher, so my frames tend to be more grid-like, but one of my favorite techniques is to cut my frame from paper (sometimes even slices of the same paper as my background), then give it a quick artistic treatment (crosshatch, underpainting, etc.) and a bevel. It's easy and I like the clean lines.

Full Heart...outer blue band

Sweet One...photo grid
