Hello and welcome to another Saturday Colour Challenge.

In my home town this week we are celebrating "Beef Week". Casino's biggest employer is an abbitor (meatworks) and we are surrounded by lots of farms. Beef Week is designed to showcase our town and all things that go with the beef industry. So are you up for my challenge? The colour challenge today, in keeping with this cow theme, is to do a black and white layout. Now if that is a little hard for all you colour girls than what about using a black and white photo? Its totally up to you.

Dont forget to post your layout here.

Have a fun filled Saturday everyone.

I like the flowers on the arbor, but I think, overall I prefer the other layout - with the touch of red ribbon.

It just balances better to my eye.

What is a Barwell boy?

Australia lost so many young men in WW1. The result was that there was an extreme shortage of men to work the land. The premier of South Australia (Sir Henry Barwell) set up a scheme for young British boys (mid to late teens) to be apprenticed to farmers and soldier settlers. There was a lot of unemployment in Britain at the time so it suited both SA and Britain. The culture shock for many would have been extreme to say the least but many of the boys endured and prospered. My husband's father did well and I think the farmer to whom he was apprenticed must have been fair and reasonable unlike some. One of the papers we have (recently acquired from the SA archives) indicated that Ken actually earned a share in at least some of the crops he helped produce. He later injured his ankle (not while an apprentice) and as he had a good education he was able to take up teaching instead. Ken arrived in 1922 (the first year of the scheme) and scheme ended in 1924, with over 1400 lads making the journey.
