Hello Scrapgirls! :D
Just starting to think about xmas gifts and I would like to make personalised coffee mugs. I want to know if anyone would know what would be the best sized canvas I should be using?? I will be having them printed at my local dept. store (you know those computer things that you do yourself)
Thanks for any help xo

Hi there. Last year I brought a Coffee Travel Mug for my DD's Teacher as an end of year thank you. I purchased Scrap Simple Craft Template: Coffee Tumbler from here at Scrap Girls. I used it and it was fantastic. I highly recommend the Template as you can reuse it over and over again and it takes all the guess work out of making one yourself. Hope this helps.

Yes.....get those templates that Karen linked! They will make your project so much easier! I did travel mugs for my family for Christmas last year and they were a BIG hit! :) Have fun!!!

BTW- You a smart girl thinking about Christmas already. I'm going to give it a couple months still before I start crafting, but I sure keep my eyes open for new ideas and inspiration!

Most coffee places sell them. You can print the inserts at home because they fit on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper.

Im in Australia and I bought the mugs from Big W and Pat is right I think most places have the mugs. I did print my inserts at home. I then cut them out and as the mugs have a transparent layer around the cup you just insert it between the cup and the transparent layer. With mine I had to unscrew the lid to put the finished template inside of the transparent layer. Hope that helps.

I have made these travel mugs for presents too and they are always a big hit! They are able to be printed on a standard 8.5x11 sheet, then just trim along the edges and slide it into the mug. The cups I have bought have a twist-off bottom to allow you to insert your artwork easily.

Good luck!

Mel, definitely do the coffee mug templates! They are so easy and fast. Here's one I made this year. I have made them for gifts. There is another thread around here somewhere that talks about them. I got my mugs at starbucks (about $10). You'll have to trim the template a little to fit it in, but it's easy. Post the results!

I got mine at Starbucks too. They start carrying them closer to the holidays. Last year I drove around town and stocked up. They were a big hit and you can send new inserts for different holidays. So, it's the gift that keeps giving.

I got my mugs at Starbucks also. They fit the template really well. In fact I often stock up on a few any time I find them as they make such great gifts.

If you want to go the ceramic mug route, there's a special type of paper called "Water Slide decal paper" that you use in your home printer (you choose between inkjet, laser and so forth), spray with a couple coats of acrylic sealer and then "slide" it over onto your mug (the paper comes with easy instructions). I used them to make decorated mini-martini glasses, but it would work on ceramic mugs, too.

Just another option :)

Another choice for ceramic mugs--http://www.shutterfly.com/photo-gifts. I just received my first mugs, and they turned out great. Next time, though, I'll do a two-page layout to cover more of the mug, or just repeat the first layout.

Oh I wish I had known about this last year. The ideas that are popping around in my head....I'm gonna have so much fun with this.

Did you order it online or find it locally? Oh boy, my raucous, silly humor is really having a hayday with some crazy gag gift ideas.

I've only been able to find it online. Not sure if I can link to them from here, so just know that the first result from a "water slide decal" search is the one I've used before :)

This seems like a really cool idea, but how well does the decal hold up on the mugs if you use them fairly regularly? Or should this just be more of a decorative item? I looked at the website that came up with the paper search and the prices are pretty reasonable.

Great question Melanie. All though, some of the gifts I have in mind won't have much of a useful life. Bwahaha. Ahhhh, hormone therapy is lovely.......<insert wicked laugh here> and always a great excuse.

Again, mine went on martini glasses that are mostly for show, though if any of my clients have actually used them and had a problem with the decal, they haven't contacted me about it. Plus, I remember talking with a mug-seller at a craft show once and it sounded like this same product she was using back then on the show circuit.

I do recommend hand-washing any items I make with the decals, just to be safe.

Joyce (Princessrunningfingers) had one of the Starbucks mugs at convention that she had made an insert for. It was really cool. I'm thinking of making some for gifts this year.

The tumbler template is an awesome idea! I am totally going to make some of those this year! It would be very cool to provide the receiver of the gift more than one template to slide into the mug. Perhaps seasonal. Different positive quotes.... etc.

The more I think about this, the more I love Carrie's idea. I set of templates with a mug as a gift. I want to make a set for myself, too. What a perfect way to use some of those products you've been storing on your computer!

Here's Syndee's template again:
ScrapSimple Craft Template: Coffee Tumbler

This would make it super easy to make sets!

I love my Starbucks tumblers with inserts. Just realize that taking the insert in and out is difficult. I have ripped many an insert pulling them out. But I like the idea of giving them a set of monthly inserts. A new one for each month of the year. Great idea.

Hehe yup, actually I put that on my "To do" List. I am going to use these ones and my colorful symphony collection to make mine :)

Sara: is there is enough space to laminate it before putting it into the opening so it doesn't get torn when you are sliding it in? Do you print yours on Photopaper or just regular?

Great minds think alike Carrie! I was just coming back to ask the same question about laminating.

Hope you'll post yours (using your Symphony collection) for us to see! Please do!
I want to use your linked circles from the Easy Going collection on mine.

I will try Cathy, I am so last minute with my crafts..I will probably make them and wrap them the same day I give them. ROFL.

I would LOVE to see yours!!

So, does anyone know if we could possibly laminate?
