Installing Vrs Organising Styles In Pse7

I have been reading through the threads in this forum regarding loading styles in PSE7. In particular:

Organizing Styles In Pse 7!, You can group them together, here's how!

I am a little confused because the thread title and many references within the posts suggest that you can organise the styles in PSE7. In my mind this means that you can create a structure and group like styles together under the one heading - as you can in PSE5. For example in PSE5 I have grouped all of my Fabric styles under the one heading, Metals under another and so on.

However, on reading through the above thread and other references and actually going through the process myself, it seems that you cannot actually group like-minded styles. That each new style must be loaded and thus displayed as a single. So to go back to my example, in PSE7 my 3 fabric styles will be listed individually within the main list.

Is this case, or am I missing a vital piece of information?

Rachel,

You can make groups of styles, for example your 3 fabric styles, and have them all appear in one heading. You just need to create a category and then add certain language to your XML file to have the category show up.

In Amy's first post, I think this is the key part:

"In the XML file, there will be a line like this: <typecategory id="CatSTYLE_NAME" value="STYLE_NAME" localize="true" />

All you need to do is change the 2nd STYLE NAME in that line to be whatever you would like to categorize that style as. So for example, if I wanted to put it into the Paper Styles category, my line will look like this: <typecategory id="CatSTYLE_NAME" value="Paper Styles" localize="true" />"

Note, if you didn't keep this line when you made your XML file, you'll need to put it back. When I organized my Scrapgirls styles, I deleted all references to categories, so mine just appear by themselves for each style. However, I know her method works because I organized my Actions in categories like she mentioned.

I hope this helps and that I didn't confuse you any further.

I have PSE7 and it worked for me. I just wrote in the other thread but will here also. I don't have any CAT in my styles but I just put the name of the style on the left of the = and the group I want it in on the right. So now I have a group with all my SG shadow styles that show up when I click on the one heading.

Actually this is a little confusing because the above line doe not show up in my XML file. I don't know why there is a difference but the line that I need to change looks like this: <category value="$$$/content/category/type/Bevels=Bevels" />

It was when you quite simply said that the name of the style goes on the left of the = sign and the name of the group I want on the right that the penny finally dropped. I now realise that for each individual XML file I want in a particular group, such as Paper or Shadows then the same group name goes on the right.

Thank you. Now I have the laborious task of creating and editing XML files for each of my SG styles.

Thanks for this information. I discovered it last night, and have started organizing my styles, and will continue to do more as my collection increases. It works like a charm.
