(lynn)
Hi mrh! Welcome to the World of Mac. I don't think that I can answer your question about putting PSE5 for Windows on the Mac although if it's an Intel Mac, you should be able to. As for doing a layout on PSE8, if you give me a bit more detail into what all the issues are that you are having regarding using PSE8 on the Mac, maybe I can help. I have PSE8 working fine now so just post what you are trying to do and I will do my best to answer your questions! Also, if you could tell me what kind of Mac you have and the operating system you are running that might help me too. To find that out, just go to the Menu Bar and there you will see an apple icon-click on it and a drop down menu will appear and highlight About This Mac. There you will see what operating system you have and what type of Mac. Is it a laptop or a desktop Mac? I have been using a Mac forever and I hope I can help you learn your way around a Mac! (lynn)
Hi Judy, Thank you for trying to help me--maybe I'm to old for all this. I spend more time on my genealogy than I do scrapping and both are so time consuming. The type of things I'd like to transfer from PC to MAC are my folders with embellishments, papers, templates, classes etc. Nothing fancy. Thanks for the directions you took the time to send. Maybe when I'm ready to do it, it will make more sense. Lynn (mrh)
mrstucci
Don't think of yourself as too old-it's 'just' a whole new computer world out there and one thing that other PC users have said before, don't make it more complicated than it is when it comes to using a Mac. Of course that's easy for me to say since I entered the computer world using a Mac........ Let me know when you want to try and we can work something out! Don't give up! Dotted
Have always used a PC and have PSE5 on it. I taught myself, it works fine and is easy, though I don't do to many lo's. My dd just sent me her 1 yr old Mac which I'm trying to figure out. I put on the trial version of PSE8 and can't figure it out at all. Can't even get a LO from it. Can I put my PSE5 for Windows onto the Mac? I've been reading about all the problems with version 8. If I don't keep my PC I'll be in trouble. Thanks for your thoughts. Lynn If you have a newer Mac you can install Fusion, and if you have it, your disk of windows OS. (Fusion creates a virtual drive that takes about 40gig of your hard drive space to add your windows and extra space for your programs.) Until i can ween myself off PC I use Fusion loaded on my Mac with, XP and Win7. I use Win7 for my Photoshop. It's easy enough to bounce between Mac and 7 since they can be loaded at the same time. I just now need a bigger hard drive to hold everything I want. I just got to tired fixing my computer, hubby's, then kid's and friends. So now I only have to fix everyone else's, lol. So yeah, you can have your cake and eat it too.
(lynn)
[Did you install PSE4 on a Mac? I'm wondering if I can install my PSE5 (for windows) on a Mac. I don't like the looks of 8. If you have installed an older version of PSE to a Mac I'd love to know how it works. Thanks. Lynn (mrh)

Pireps
I just switched from a PC to an iMac a few months ago and I LOVE it!!! I backed up all of my files on an external hard drive and loaded them into Documents on my iMac the same way you do it on a PC. Piece of cake. My problem is that I have all the styles installed and I can see them when I click on the "Show all", but they aren't listed in the pull-down with the other Adobe Styles. On my PC, I would click on the Layer Styles icon, then I went to the drop down menu next to the icons and it would give me a long list of the Style File Names. I chose the Style I wanted and them it displayed their thumbnails int he window below. Why can't I see the Style Names in the drop down window. It's going to make finding the specific style very time consuming if I have to show all of them and scroll through the thumbnails for the147 different styles I have. Help!!! mrstucci
Are you using PSE8? Not sure exactly what is going on but that is probably because I have never used a PC before. I do know that after all the styles are installed on a Mac (or if you add any new ones), you have to rebuild the database. If you haven't done that, let me know and I can tell you what to do. Maybe my brain is just tired tonight but let me know if you rebuilt the database or not. Will go from there, Judy
capecod671
Thank you! I just couldnt manage to install Sue Chastain's new 30 patterned layer styles by Shelby Kate Schmitz, but thanks to you I now have them in my new IntelMac into PSE version 8. Its a convoluted process, but you explained it well. I ended up with some duplicates, but Im a bit intimidated about replacing the MediadatabaseOLD.db3, this process evades my old brain a bit. So perhaps I should put a screenshot in so that you can point this out to me. You have saved my day!
mrstucci
It is VERY complicated-not sure why it has to be but then I don't understand those kind of things. I just do what needs to be done. Now as for which ones you can delete....... the one that is called MediaDatabase.db3 (the top one in the list)-change that to MediaDatabaseOLD.db3 (adding the OLD before the dotdb3). Delete the other two (Note the differences in the icons-2 look like a white piece of paper with the top left corner folded down but the one labeled MediaDatabase.old is a blackish icon-that one was named incorrectly-there isn't the extension 'db3' appended to it like it should be-a very easy mistake to make-I do that very often, way too often!). Now you should just have the one in the list-MediaDatabaseOLD.db3. Make sure that PSE8 is shut down. Now start up PSE8 again and it will rebuild the database. If you go back into the same folder again (with the MediaDatabase.db3 in it), you will see the new database and the one that you labeled with the OLD in it. Just leave that as it is. Next time you get a new style, go through the same thing again: rename the current database, MediaDatabaseOLD.db3, and start up PSE8 and let it rebuild again. Always make sure that PSE8 is not open when you do this. As for the duplicates-when PSE8 is open and I am going through the icons of the different styles I have, I have tons of duplicates! I have posted in other forums (including Adobe's) about this issue and there isn't a solution to get rid of them. They aren't listed as duplicates in any folder that I can see. So I just deal with them. Maybe these aren't the duplicates you are talking about but these are the duplicates that I have....... Well, I hope I have helped you out! If you are confused about something, just ask again. I don't mind. Judy
Pireps
Found your directions somewhere, this thread maybe, so I renamed the file with OLD and let it rebuild. They seem to be there because there are so many when I click the "see all". Is there something I can do to see the names in the list? If it helps I installed the .asl file but not inside each folder. It's been so long since I have done this. I think brushes have to stay inside the folder and styles don't? I haven't tried to install brush yet. I'm taking the Totally Touchable Textures class installed the Aged Metals texture. I copied the .asl file and pasted it here... MacintoshHD > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 8.0 > Locale > en_US > Photo Creations > Layer Styles Then I started up PSE8 and let it load all its stuff. I went to look in the folders again. In the en_US folder I have two folders (Photo Creations, Workflow Panels) and two other files: MediaDatabase.db3 (the icon is the white paper with folded corner) and MediaDatabaseOLD.db3 (the icon is blackish). When I start up PSE8 and let it load the new stuff, is it supposed to make a new black icon Media file? I have an iMac, if that makes any difference. Sorry it took so long to respond. I had to wrap up some online college classes. I'm free for the summer now. This site is so amazing. I don't know what I would have done without all of you helpful women;) Gwen
mrstucci
Hi Gwen! The only way I know to see the names is to click once on the style and hover over the square and the name will pop up. What I did though so I could find the one I am looking for is to go to the folder all the styles are in, Select All, Copy and then paste into either TextEdit or any word processor and Paste. Then I print out the list. Hope I explained this clear enough......... All my asls are in a folder on my MacHD (this is the path: MacHD--->Library--->Application Support--->Adobe--->Photoshop Elements--->8.0--->Locale--->en_US--->Photo Creations--->layer styles. If this doesn't answer your question, ask again. My brain is mush tonight I am afraid! I keep all my abrs in a separate folder, in my Digi Stuff and access them through Brush Pilot or through the brush option in PSE8. Is all this clear as mud?? Judy PS- I just have to ask........ you have a home in Alaska and Cape Cod???? You must rack up some serious frequent flyer miles!
Pireps
It seems like I can't have what I want On my PC, when you click on the Layer Styles icon in the Effects box it would show you one set of styles. Then you could click on hte little black arrow in the drop down box and it would list Drop Shadows, Bevel, Glass Buttons, etc. It included the names of all the layer styles I had added also: Aged Paper 5201, Clear Tints 4101, Fabric 5401, etc. I could click on hte particular style I wanted and the thumbnail box would only show the thumbnails for that style. Right now I have to click on the ALL and wait 5 minutes for all of the thumbnails to come and hunt around for the one I want. Since I have close to 150 styles and most of those have 5 or more thumbnails it is quite time consuming. I was hoping to find a way to get the drop down menu to show me the list of style names, but it doesn't sound like Mac can handle it. bummer Thanks for trying;) I am originally from Cape Cod and it will be my home again someday, so I claim it! For the next few years I will be living in Alaska. We were in Germany before here, so I'm used to the travel. I'm getting ready to bring my girls back there for a visit in July. I can't wait! mrstucci
I wish that there was a similar way to see all the styles in PSE8 for the Mac! That sounds very nice. B&K Mom
OK, I'm pulling out my hair right now. Just got a new computer and could upgrade to PSE 8. Thanks for the info on how to load styles/actions. I followed the instructions to a tee. I also came up with the problem of duplicates in Show All. What's irking me the most is that my SG styles don't show up in the dropdown menu. There's no way to find something quickly except to hunt and peck. That is definitely the way I scrap. I'm a woman on a mission when I scrap. I want to go to my menu, find my style, apply and move on. Please tell me I'm going to get used to this new picture only view (with no labels...OMG!). Please tell me it's going to be OK. BTW, does anyone know how to add custom shapes? I added the .csh flies to the shapes folder, and NONE of my shapes showed up (after I rebuilt the db). <<sigh>> Thanks for the sympathetic ear. Sara Arell
Can you find a place that will give me a new Mac for free if I purchase PSE 8? I'd be willing to pay even $150 for PSE with that deal! LOL. My Mac is too old and HD/RAM not up to speed for the newer programs. So for now I'll plug away with PSE 4!!!! (OK, stop laughing ) Sorry, Debbie - I'm still laughing! Have you ever known Mac to give ANYTHING for free? I'd be willing to go for that deal too so if I find one you will be the first to know! :giggle_bear: :giggle_bear:
capecod671
This was a real shocker, but I actually got a new Mac from Apple for free! My old 20 inch screen iMac was within the serial number group which had a 'known issue' with the power supply and mother board. Mine popped its power supply one day and my husband asked me if I was burning toast! I shut it right off. And had it replaced also they replaced the motherboard too. Free, as I had luckily bought Apple Care. Then it happened 3 more times, over the next 3 years, at no cost to me or my local Mac store who repaired it each time. One of the Apple tech support reps who I was talking to, said, "If this happens to this customer again, she should be eligible for a new computer". Then when it was about 4 years old, a year out of warantee, it did it again! So I went to my local Mac store who had been doing all the repairs for free, and he told me to call again, no matter how old the computer was, and refer to what the other agent said. I followed his instructions, and Apple sent me this brand new 24 inch iMac for Free, even paid for the shipping! Jane

They have a great reputation and great tech support. The Apple Care program is worth every penny. I just got my new (refurbished) MacBook Pro, and I'm having problems with the headphone jack being iffy. Glad to have Apple Care. BTW, after I posted last night, I found a post about finding and creating .xml files to get the thumbnails to show properly and to get my styles listed in the drop-down menu. I'm going to try it today. Wish me luck!
B&K Mom
I finally got my Styles to show up in the drop down list!!!!!!!! It's a miracle (courtesy of many web searches and one kind woman who led me to Linda Sattgast's instructions that were the clearest to me). Here are her instructions for creating metadata.xml files: Step 1: Finding the .xml files for layer styles: Follow this path to the layer styles .xml files (this is a different path than where the .asl files were placed): My HD > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 8.0 > Photo Creations > layer styles Add a copy of each of your layer style .asl files here as well. Step 2: Creating a correct metadata.xml file Click on one of the metadata.xml files, press Cmd C to copy it, click on your desktop, and press Cmd V to paste a copy of the xml file. Change the name of this file to your new layer style, making sure you keep the .metadata.xml ending. Right click or Ctrl click on the file and choose Open with Text Edit. Find the two places in the code where you see the name of the original layer style entered twice with an = sign between them, and replace them with your new layer style name using the exact same structure. If the title has more than one word, the first name will have no spaces between the words of the title, and the second name will have spaces between the words of the title. In both cases, the words should retain their capitalization. Starting with the line after the name, highlight all the code except for the very last line. Press the Delete key to remove it. There should be one line of space between the line with the name and the last line that says Choose File > Save to save your changes. Click and drag this new metadata file into the layer styles folder it originally came from. Step 3: Open Photoshop Elements 8 When you open Photoshop Elements 8, you?ll get a dialog box that says "Building Content and Effects." This may take up to 5 minutes. When the dialog box disappears, open the Effects panel, click on the Layer Styles icon at the top, open the menu and you should see your styles in the list. Now you can double click on a style to apply it to an object on the selected layer. This still doesn't clear up the duplicate styles in the Show All. BUT now I can just go get my styles from the DROP DOWN LIST!!! I don't have to look around at all that mess. Hope this helps someone else too. Off to load more styles! mrstucci
I will give that a try when I have some 'free' time! Thanks for posting that. I sure would love to get rid of my duplicate styles though. That just grates on me-it's one of 'those' things! Like sheets that won't stay taut-I hate that! Ugh. BTW, I also got a free laptop from Apple-after about 18 months, the logic board went out on my laptop and a new one couldn't be found so Apple asked if I would take a new one in place of the old........ DUH!!! YEA!!! The bad part was that I was without a computer for about 3 weeks I think but it seemed like forever. Me and my MBP are joined at the hip....... sad but true. Thanks again for posting on how to show the list........... Judy Today is a day to remember, nine-eleven. My heart still aches.......
