Your Scrapbook Pages -- Published!

Would you love to have your layouts published in one of scrapbook magazines? Below you will find information and links for electronically submitting layouts to several major scrapbook magazines.

THE BENEFITS:
There is many benefits for submitting your scrapbook layouts to magazines. Some may include:

• The joy of seeing your work in print
  
• Free Money! Some magazines offer cash payments
  
• Free publications (you almost always get a free copy of the issue that your LO is published in)
  
• Free products (some publications may send you some freebies to work with in the future)
  
• A way to build your scrapbook "resume" (great if you wish to work in this industry)
  
• ...and last but not least, if you use all Scrap Girls supplies, we will give you a free product JUST for submitting and a gift certificate if you actually get published!

THE FIRST STEP:
Create your layout and take great care to record the materials you use. There is a variety of ways to track the supplies -- some scrappers jot the supplies on the back of their layouts (when its a paper or printed layout), others make lists of the supplies in a file on their computer or in a notebook at their desk.

My favorite method? Saving the product names used in the meta date of my layout. In PS or PSE, create your layout. Then go to File --> File Info and in the comments area, type the supplies you used in the "descriptions" area. Click "ok" and now it will be embedded into your layout. You can also resize the layout or save as a jpg and it will still be embedded, however DO NOT use the "save for web" option with this method -- it won't work.

By using the meta data method, your supply list will be convenient for anyone you send you layout to, but it will also be easy for you to copy and paste the supplies when submitting it to magazines.

SEND THEM YOUR WORK:
In order to be considered for publication in a magazine, you must send them a copy of your layout. DO NOT send the magazine your original copy. If you are selected for publication, they will write you and ask for your original. To send a "preview" of your layout through email or on a website, you will send a file attachment. For paper layouts this is first done by scanning your layout on a scranner or by taking a photo of it with a digital camera. After this is done, the you will save the layout on your computer or a disc, so you would simply send or upload the file containing your layout.

If you scrapbook digitally, you will do the same thing, except you won't have to scan or photograph your layout -- it's already on file! Here are some general tips:

*Resize your image to 72 dpi and a width of approximately 500 pixels wide.
*Save the file as a JPEG (.jpg) format.
*When emailing submissions, attach only one layout per email
*When submitting for a specific call, note the title of the request in the subject line
*Be sure to include your contact information – name, address, phone number and email address

And the most important tip? Read the submission guidelines for each publication! They do vary from magazine to magazine. For example, Creating Keepsakes wants files to be sized 500k or less, whereas Memory Makers Magazine asks that they not be over 100k in size. Just read the guidelines for each publication and if you aren't sure, feel free to email the publication or you can even post on the SG message board in the "Get Published" forum:

Some of the magazines have a online submission form, while others list an email address for layouts to be sent to. Be sure to read each page carefully to better ensure that your layout is properly received and considered -- each publication varies.

NOTE: Magazines work approximately six months in advance, so, for example, Christmas layouts are usually submitted in the Summer. Increase your chances of being published by keeping this in mind and paying attention to specific calls on each website below.

I guess if scrapsubmit sends your LOs to more than one publication at a time--that submitting the same LO to more than one publication at the same time is definitely O.K.?

Hi Kerry,
Sorry to make you wait 8 months before replying!! I didn't see your message until today.

Anyway, yes, you can submit the same layout to more than one publication, but of course, you will only be able to let one magazine have the publishing rights to that layout. So let's say you submit to magazine A and magazine B. And magazine A would like to publish your layout and you agree, but a month later, magazine B emails and says they want it, you will have to tell magazine B that it's not available any longer.

I just found this information, but wish I had found it a week ago. lol I submitted my first layout to, 'Ready Set Create', but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm not sure if I submitted it correctly or if it's actually good enough for publication, but I did it anyway. roflol

Do any of the publications pay you for publishing? You know, like freelance writers get paid for articles in newspapers and magazines?

Do most of them always ask in follow-up for an original? Where do you find the best printing and then envelope for a 12x12?
I haven't printed yet, I'm saving to do a small book, several copies, all at once! So I'm not sure.

Christy, I have been published in Ready, Set, Create and Scrap N Art ezines and this has been my experience:

*The ezines use the digital copy you send in.
*You usually get a free copy/subscription of the magazine you have been published in.
*For every layout published in Ready, Set, Create using SG materials you get a $5 store credit. Get Published = Get Rewarded

I know in the past print magazines used to pay, but I am not sure which ones do anymore.
