Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time. John Lubbock

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” - Dale Carnegie
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” - Thich Nhat Hanh

From the time I read this verse ( taken from one of my favourite books of all time " Simple Abundance... A Daybook of Comfort and Joy " by Sarah Ban Breathnach ) I have looked upon house cleaning in a different light. Not that it has encouraged me to do it more often, just to think about it differently when I do.
Time to dust again.
Time to caress my house,
to stroke all it's surfaces.
I want to think of it as a kind of lovemaking
.....the chance to appreciate by touch
what I live with and cherish.

Oh, Kay - this is a wonderful way to think about house cleaning - I hope I can think that way today as I have much to do to prepare for my daughter's visit who is OCD about house cleaning - funny thing - I USED to be - guess that's where she got it, but lately, my mantra has been "there's always tomorrow" and now I find myself scurrying to get things done before her arrival and the look I know I will get from her and hearing in my ears already the "Mom!" Like - what's up with this? LOL LOL Thanks for the great quote - I will put it to use today and tomorrow and the next day and then she's here!

Some people try to turn back their odometers
Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way.
I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Remember that kid's book? I still have a copy of it - and I love it - the Little Engine that Could.

"You Raise Me Up"
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.
There is no life - no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You're right, Karen - it is a hymn - it just says so many things that can be taken in so many ways, I think - when I first heard it I didn't think of it as a hymn until I bought the CD and listened to it again and again and it is definitely a hymn and is speaking of God but I thought it also spoke to so many other things too.
I wish I still had all of my stories about The Little Engine that Could I only have the one book - so many things I wish I had kept or that my Mom had kept for me - I do have a very old book that has lots of the old fairy tales in it - most of them are stories that parents no longer tell children anymore - it's a shame - I grew up on them - young parents today say that some of the nursery rhymes and stories scare their children -

I don't know who said this, but it's pretty true and I use this at work alot!
I know this is a year old, but I just say this site now.
In Afrikaans we have a saying: Vele hande maak ligte werk (Many hands make light work) but
Baie bekke maak baie skottelgoed. (Lot of mouths make a lot of dirty dishes)
Sorry does not translate so well but I just had to tell you our one.
So you see, you can't win. LOL

"A wee bit of heaven
drifted down from above-
A handful of happiness,
a heart full of love.
The mystery of life,
so sacred and sweet-
The giver of joy
so deep and complete.
Precious and priceless,
so lovable, too-
The world's sweetest miracle,
baby, is you."
