On Saturday a.m. (12/5) I thought my water may have broken. I wasn't sure and the on-call OB couldn't definitively say no based on what I told her so she sent me to L&D to be checked. Well it turns out my water hadn't broken but I was between 3-4 cm dilated so they decided to admit me. I hadn't been having any contractions regularly enough for me to call them "labor" so I had my water broken to see if that would move things along. It did somewhat--I was having contractions but I just wasn't feeling them--just a lot of pressure.
After a few hours of this, I was given the dreaded Pitocin which started kicking in right away. At first, the pain was manageable but then it got to a point where I would end up in tears through each contraction. The contractions were so strong they were going off of the chart! I asked for the epidural at this point which made me even more emotional since I didn't need an epidural with my first daughter. Every labor definitely is different. Anyway, I got the epidural and my pain level was a lot more manageable. I was feeling a lot of pressure during the contractions so the nurses were excited and betting on when I would get to 10 cm and be ready to push.
Well, I never got to 10 cm dilated. When I got to 8 1/2 cm dilated, Akira's heart rate started to decelerate more than they like to see and nothing we tried worked--oxygen, switching sides. It started getting dangerously low so the decision was made to have an emergency c-section. At this point, everything happened so fast! I was given stronger meds through my epidural, I was prepped, DSO shows up and next thing I know, I hear a strong little cry. Akira was born @5:03pm on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009! She was 7 lbs 9 oz 20 inches long and her Apgar scores were 9 and 9. It turns out she had a true knot in her umbilical cord and she also had the cord wrapped around her neck which caused her distress. She is doing fine and I am slowly recovering from the surgery and am completely enamored of my little girl
Oh and my oldest dd is doing a great job as a big sister although sometimes I think she gets tired of the hype surrounding her little sister
Sorry the pics are so large--not enough time or energy to go back and resize right now...
