"nifty Fifty"

Recommended Posts

Good Morning Gals! I decided to start a new topic for our new lenses!

I took a couple of photos at my son's which I am going to try to upload. I took both photos in natural light - outside one was early evening but still rather dark. I was please with the results.

Just discovered I don't know how to insert the images. :hit-head-with-hammer:

LOL! I've only put images in my MB posts a few times and I'm not sure I remember...will have to look around for the instructions and size limits, etc. I'm very excited to have a place to work on photography together. We asked and the team responded. What a great place this is.

It worked! I'm so impressed with myself! First time I tried to use icon above and then realized I had to go down below to upload the image.

I don't think the full effect of the lens comes through in posted images bit I am very pleased. I had to up the ISO to 400 for the outside shot taken at 7:30pm. The inside image I used 200 ISO. I am pleased with the speed, color and sharpness of this lens.

Caren, I'm still waiting for that link! Com'mon girl, put temptation in my path! :disappearing-smilie:

Great shots, Margot! Love the feel on the lights in both shots.

I did respond with directions, but by the time I had them posted, you had already figured it out! They look good.

Di - the "nifty fifty" is a Canon lens - search for Canon 50mm 1.8 and it should come up for you!

Di -

Thanks for commenting on my quote - and it is oh so true and sometimes I have to remind myself of just that!

The lens - well it has a fixed length, which I like, as I am a beginner and trying to frame the shot just right can really make a picture, With the other lens, I am prone to being too far away, and so this helps.

It takes very clear pictures and due to the 1.8 factor (which I am just learning to understand), it lets more light in, which means you can take better pictures in low light conditions and for indoors, you don't always have to use the flash, which produces more natural looking snapshots and portraits.

Also, a lot of people (myself included) like the look where you forcus on your subject, and the rest of your picture looks blurred, sort of soft and dreamy, this lens helps you obtain that look when you are set to a higher apeture like 2.8 or more. When set to a lower number, like 5.6 or less, you get a very defined background, or depth of field is what it is called.

Oh my, I think I am starting to catch on.....

Di, this is a just about perfect little portrait lens. It allows a large aperture so you get a shallow depth of field. That's cool for portraits where the person's face is in sharp focus and the background is blurred, a very cool effect. The "nifty" part of this lens is that it is one of the least expensive lenses available....around $99. Two other, and more costly lenses that do beautiful portrait are the macro lenses, the 60mm and 100mm. I have a friend who is selling off all his canon stuff and has a 100mm he is willing to let me have for a good price. I'm thinking about it. I have the 60mm and I love using it for portraits too.

Wow....what great explanations....I actually understood just about all of it (still a bit confused on 1.8 factor) But I'm learning thanks to you generous ladies who are willing to share their knowledge.

Question....can this lens go on a Nikon camera? Or do they have one that is like that for Nikon too?

Thanks, Sandi! I have taken advantage of my holiday time off from work and did lots of reading and taking photos with different settings, to help me understand it all just a little bit more!!

I plan to spend some quality time with my field guide and videos for my 7D today. I was able to translate a lot of the basics from my SXi, but there are so many differences too. The magic Lantern Guide release date has been set back, but it should be out this week or next I believe.

Terrific! I wake up this morning and we have a "nifty fifty" thread!

Margot, I love your photos. The outside one, especially. Really clear and sharp; I can't see any noise anyplace. Thanks so much for posting them!

Di, to understand apertures, you have to realize they are fractions - the larger the number, the smaller the value. Large aperture numbers, f/11, f/16, f/22,for instance mean a smaller opening in the lens through which light can enter. Small aperture numbers, f/2, f/1.8, f/1.4, mean a much larger opening in the lens, and more light reaching the camera's sensor. Large number = small opening. Small number = large opening. And with a larger opening, and more natural light entering the camera, you can take much better photos in low light situations. As in Margot's outside photo taken in the evening - without a flash! And as several have pointed out here, a large aperture gives a wonderful shallow depth of field, which makes it perfect for portraits.

Most camera companies have their own lenses for their cameras and they are not interchangeable. The Canon lens won't go on a Nikon camera, but Nikon makes one like it for their cameras. There are certain adapters, I believe, so this is possible, but I haven't gone into all that yet. And there are other companies who make lenses for many different cameras, Sony, Nikon, Canon, etc...

So much to learn! And I see from the Newsletter this morning that Mary Elizabeth is going to begin a Photo Focus chat! Just what we've all been wanting! Can't wait!

Now, I need to get out and take some photos! You've all inspired me!

Great photo's Margot. $99 for a fixed 50MM lense by Canon? I've never seen it for that price. Wow!! What's the aperature setting fixed at? 1.8 or 2.0?

Sarah you did a great job of explaining. I always remember the settings by what I want to do with my photo. Meaning Di, if I want a full solid view of lets say a landscape photo, I would use a f11 or higher. If I want to focus on my subject and blur the background I would use a f2 or f4. Kind of a way to not have to remember the whole higher/lower thing, although it is good to understand the way the light enters the camera.

Oh, I love my nifty fifty!! Nikon does have their own version. It is about $125... which is still very reasonable for a lens. It's what I throw on when my girls are in the mood for an official 'photo shoot'! :)

Christy - great photo! I just found out that the thumbnails can be enlarged! lol Better late than never.

Great picture, love the color and all! My son and 4 year old granddaughter are on their way over, getting my camera ready and hope to get some good shots with my nifty fifty also!

Love to see everyone's pictures - Sandi, we are still waiting for some 7D shots from that new camera of yours!
