However, you can use Picasa with Windows 7 to organize your supplies without needing to duplicate your files. Even without tagging, Picasa can show you all of your papers, say, or find all of your staples (I tend to scrap that way too.) I don't know about DIP, but you can open an item directly from Picasa into PSE. Picasa can also pull things up by color, not just by type. Scrapgirls files are very easy to use this way.
And you are very smart to get organized first! But don't deprive yourself of boutique shopping in the interim - anything you want can go into your Kaboodle list (there is a button on each item's page.) Then you can treat yourself when you get it set up the way you like.
I can't find the book! Will go on searching for it and try to give you an answer on the whole library thing.

Oh, no! That's not helpful...I haven't tagged or organized my supplies in a LOOOOOONG time! I just downloaded Picasa because of all the stuff I've read on the MB here. Hope it motivates me to organize! LOL

Libraries are where you go to manage your documents, music, pictures, and other files. You can browse your files the same way you would in a folder, or you can view your files arranged by properties like date, type, and author.
In some ways, a library is similar to a folder. For example, when you open a library, you'll see one or more files. However, unlike a folder, a library gathers files that are stored in several locations. This is a subtle, but important, difference. Libraries don't actually store your items. They monitor folders that contain your items, and let you access and arrange the items in different ways. For instance, if you have music files in folders on your hard disk and on an external drive, you can access all of your music files at once using the Music library.

You cannot tag a PNG directly in Windows XP either. When you tag it in Picasa, you're really saying "Picasa, please store this tag for me and treat it as if I actually modified the file's properties." PNGs have no way to retain the tag inside the file structure. So, yes, it works fine in Picasa (or other organizers) in any of the operating systems. No edition of Windows or any other operating systems can do it on their own; Picasa's features work in any of these to make it seem as if the PNG itself is tagged.
When you move a file _inside_ Picasa, it can track it and retain the tag information for the file. If you go outside to your folders and move the file, Picasa has no way to "know" this, and so it loses the tags. Sorry for not being clear the first time.
