GatorGirl
I've come to the experts to find out how to use masks. I have picked up freebie masks around the internet but they always come with photoshop tuts/directions. I know PSP doesn't use 'clipping masks'---a term I stumble on often. What do PSP users do when it comes to using a mask? Does anyone know of a PSP tut that will explain the steps for me? I have masks to use on photos---I just can't figure out how to use them. I've read the tuts here at SG--but they do not apply. `Can someone help, please? Karen

Bride
There are 2 different ways I use masks in psp – and it depends on the mask as to how I use it. I haven’t totally figured out why one method works on some masks and the other one works on others and hopefully someone more experienced has an answer for that, but here is what I do: Method One: First, make sure you are working with a copy of the mask so you don’t accidentally lose you mask in a save. Put mask on bottom layer, then place your photo on second layer on top. Select the mask layer, use magic wand and click on mask to get “marching ants”. Then select the photo layer, go up to top menu bar and choose Selections/invert. Hit your delete button on keyboard and then hold your ctrl key down and hit the “d” key to deselect. There you will have a photo clipped to the mask. Method Two: Open your mask and minimize it in your PSP work area. Open the photo or paper that you want to mask and make a copy (again, so you don’t lose the original). While you have the photo/paper open as a single layer, right click on the thumbnail of it in your layers palette choose “new mask layer/from image”. A small “Add Mask from Image” window will appear. Use the drop down menu to find the name of the mask you have in your workspace and select it. Make sure you have Source luminance selected in that window and click “ok” You will now see 3 layers in your Layers Palette, the “clipped” layer, the mask, and the original photo/paper. To move this over to the layout you wish to place it on, select copy/merge then open your layout and paste as new layer. Hope this helps!
Bride
Also, in this PSP forum there is a pinned thread titled “Psp Users-tutorial links” that Dee has prepared. The sixth tutorial from the bottom tells “Using Layer Masks with Scrap Simple Paper Templates.
