I did have a problem with Picasa once and had to basically reboot my collection (sorry that is not what it is called - meant reloading it and setting up a new database). Since then, no problems!

I do sometimes have a problem getting photos to come up with a search, which I have fixed by beginning each of those folders with the word "photo".

Marylou, do you mean you have to uninstall and reinstall Picasa? I just downloaded Picasa a few weeks ago and now it won't open anything, nor will it open itself when I try to do so from the start menu. I like it better than WPG because I found it to be faster than Windows Photo Gallery and it previews PSD files. However, if it doesn't work, it doesn't help me. Just wondering if I should uninstall and reinstall to fix it now.

OK I was wrong again, lol! You do rebuild the database by uninstalling and reinstalling. Here are the official directions:

General information

If you notice oddities in the appearance and placement of your photos within Picasa, you may need to rebuild your Picasa database. For each photo, the Picasa database keeps record of the following information:

Location of the files

Unsaved edits made to them

Album organization

Previews of the images

The rebuilding process won't affect your actual photos, but rather rebuilds the database that stores the information about your photos. However, if Picasa closes unexpectedly during the scan to recreate your photos database, your previous album organizations may be affected. We recommend that you back up your photos, edits, and album organization to CD/DVD or an external drive before starting the rebuilding process.

Steps to rebuild your database

Windows

First, uninstall Picasa.

Click on the Start menu on your computer taskbar.

Select All Programs.

Select Picasa 3.

Select Uninstall.

In the confirmation window that opens, click the Uninstall button.

Click the Yes button to remove your database.

Once you've successfully uninstalled, you can download and reinstall Picasa by visiting http://www.picasa.google.com.

Once you select the areas you'd like Picasa to scan, it will scan your photos to recreate your database.
