I have seen this done on LOs on the internet, in magazines, and possibly in our gallery (can't find one when I need it though). It's a paper strip that that looks like you rolled it up and let it lay on the background paper. The effect I am trying to produce would look like it was a tube that was cut lengthwise, like the roof of a tunnel. I hope that's clearer than mud. :P

I have tried using a round brush on a paper strip with dodge and burn. I was hoping that by making the center of the strip lighter and the edges darker it would give more dimension and look rolled. I can get the paper to get some slight dimension, but certainly not rolled.

I would LOVE some tips, ideas, help, or tutorials on this please! LOL

If you have accomplished this please tell me how! I really would like to know what settings for dodge and burn, and brush size too.

You know I've never tried this so I'm not going to be any help. Perhaps there's an embellishment template that can help you with this?

In any case, I'm bumping this up so someone more knowledgeable can help you. :)

If I understand you right, I did something like this about a year ago. It was published in RSC, so I removed it from the gallery. It's been a while, so I've put it back in - take a look to see if it's what you're talking about.

Kissing Cousins

I don't have the .psd anymore so I can't check my settings. But what I remember doing is creating a paper strip the width of the "tube" i was trying to create. Then I added a simple inner bevel to the strip and increased the size of the bevel until the curve seemed to "meet" in the middle.

You'll see that the ends of the strips are beveled too, but we want to get rid of that. At this point you simplify the layer, locking the style. Then you can trim the ends with the unwanted bevel off. Add a drop shadow to complete the look. Hope this helps!

If this is what you're looking for, and you have trouble with this technique as I've described, let me know. I can walk through the steps again to recreate it.

There are likely tutorials on how to do this kind of thing, but if I understand correctly what you are looking for, there are also downloads that you can purchase for turned corners and edges. There was a free rolled edge in todays Newsletter, from the washed and worn collection. Perhaps it's what you are looking for! If not, please mention what software you are using and someone should be able to get you the information that you are looking for. :-)

Elisha,

Gave it a go tonight using PSE 7.

I was able to get some dimension, but nothing like the tubes on your LO.

I used the simple bevel, then Layer -> Layer Styles -> Scale Effects. I slid the slider to all the way up, but I only get a softly curved paper.

Is this something I can't do in PSE 7, or am I missing something?

No, Karen - I think I missed something. I ran through my steps again. I think the key is making your tube wider than you need it, and then resizing it after it's simplified. Make it narrower, and that seems to intensify the height. Let me see if I can walk you through it.

If I'm working with a paper that I want to be a shape, I always start with that shape and clip my paper to it. In this case I created a rectangle with the shape tool, and applied the bevel style to it. Remember to make it about 50% wider than you need and a little taller/longer (because you're going to trim the ends) Now I don't use Layer -> Layer Styles -> Scale Effects as you did. To set my bevel, I double click on the little "fx" on the layer in my layers palette. That brings up a window like this:
Attached File  Tube Bevel Settings.jpg (53.68K)
Number of downloads: 23
This is a simple inner bevel. As I said previously, I adjusted the slider increasing the size of the bevel until it seemed to "meet" softly in the middle. These are the final settings.

At this point I'll bring in a paper, and clip it to the shape. The paper takes the bevel effect of the shape. You can move your paper around until you get the pattern placed where you want it to be. When I'm satisfied, merge the two layers together. This will simplify the layer.

Now I used my rectangular marquee tool to select each end and delete that portion. This trims the bevel from the ends.

At this point you need to make your tube narrower. This is the part I missed above. Now this will distort your paper slightly, so you may want to adjust that in the previous step, widening your paper. Make sure you resize it by grabbing the side edges, not the corners. Now you can apply a shadow. I started with the gray large style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501, but I adjusted the settings a bit. Here are my shadow settings:

Attached File  Tube Shadow Settings.jpg (57.64K)
Number of downloads: 39

Here is a screenshot showing my shape in the original size with the bevel applied next to the final product:

Attached File  Tube.jpg (386K)
Number of downloads: 40
I used papers from Brandy's Ruby Collection.

Play around with this. This is not a hard and fast technique - just the result of playing around myself.

If I do this again, I may duplicate the rolled layer, put it beneath the original, reduce the size a tiny bit and move it a pixel lower. It might give it more dimension, as if you could see a little bit of the inside of the roll.

Hmm... Any designers out there? A template would be cool!

Thanks Elisha. I will try that later today. I'm just getting the kids ready for school, and I'm on my way to help out at a church lunch.

This technique is totally worth spending time on, I love the effect! Thank you for your patient hand holding :) Where did you learn this cool trick?

Ooooooh yes, a template would be cool too... one with different sizes of tubes and some "half tubes" or tunnels.

Because I'm entirely too lazy to do it myself! Thanks a bunch!! Although Elisha did give a pretty good tutorial but I'm using PS so..yeah..give me a template!! Will it include spirals that you can make by wrapping a paper around a pencil? The set can be called pencil wrappings!

I've been watching this thread and have tried in to make one in PSP, with no good results yet, so am looking forward to see what you come up with. Will they be different sizes or resizable without losing attributes? Is there a possibility of doing a few different angles, so you could see the curl at the end of the tube?

I don't mean to go to far with this, but the possiblities are exciting. :-)

So awesome V, thank you!

I just got home from a church luncheon, now I have some time to try Elisha's steps. I am fairly determined to make a tube on my own! (I know I will still buy the template ;P)

Ok..hoping I can help out here..I use pscs3..paint shop pro 9 and ps 7 ..but I believe ps 7 you can use plug in/ filters right? av bro has page curl..I just bring up the paper I want to use..use the selection tool and use rectangle tool..select the area I want to use. Than make that into a new layer. Then duplicate that layer..now the top layer use av bros ..play with the setting..you will get a roll..then just drop shadow it..to your liking..then take that to your LO and put it where ever you want.
Posted Image

I am new here so I hope I am helping..I sort of jumped right in..so sorry if I didn't do it right..lol. Don't kill me please, I use filter/plugins all the time..I love them..I think av bro has trial version you can use just to make this if you don't have it or don't want to purchase it right now..I am probably telling you something you already know..ss if I seem so dumb..I am sort of new to scrapping ..but I have used psp 9 for years making signature tags.

Interesting seeing this thread pop up again. Anyone still interested in a template? I think I know a designer who might be able to do one. ;)

So far we've got the paper tube, and Ashleigh suggested spiral strips. Any other requests to consider?

I'm still interested in tubes, Elisha!! I have to admit I haven't tried them since the the thread was going ages ago. Even if I can make a decent tube on my own, I would STILL buy the template. I love the idea of spiral strips! :)
