Carbonite

Recommended Posts

I just installed Backblaze and am trying it free for 15 days. I chose to go with them over the other two, due the EHD issue. Carbonite doesn't do EHD's and Backblaze remembers your EHD and doesn't have to start all over if it's disconnected during computer use like Mozy. You also don't have to leave your computer on all night like some have said they did. I don't know about the other two in that area. I was just reading the tips as it was getting started and that's what it said. My tech guy said while it's not gonna really hurt anything to leave it on all the time, it's not the best either. #1 all the electricity you are paying for, #2 your computer should be restarted regularly because it resets certain things that software changes and such with use and #3 it is putting wear and tear on your computer parts unnecessarily, very possibly causing things to be replaced sooner than would have been necessary. (fans, power source etc.) It makes sense to me.

Blackblaze would not work correctly with my Mac - and my IT guy said that a lot of Mac users have problems with it - right now I am happy with the three EHD's that I use and there are still some things that I just habitually back up on DVD's or Thumb Drives so that I can take them with me without having to take my EHD all the time.

Carbonite doesn't do external drives. Mozy and Backblaze do back up external drives. I haven't tried them to know which one is better, but there is someone on the message board who is trying them both to see which she likes better.

I found out about Carbonite and the EHD's the hard way, April - thought I was backing them up and discovered after a month that I had not been backing anything up - and the way things were hooked up it was not backing up my computer either so now I just stick to my EHD's and so far, no problems - keeping my fingers crossed.

i have been using mozy for 2 years and use it to back up my ehd...but i do have to remember to suspend the backups if i want to disconnect the ehd ...so i am wondering how that works with blackblaze...

Well I have only had it running since yesterday morning. I have three EHD's and two internal hard drives, so I think it's going to take forever to get all uploaded and backed up. I probably will fix the settings so it doesn't backup my extra internal. Just haven't got around to it yet. It's purpose it to be a backup only anyway. So why back up the backup? I found having an extra internal backs up files so much quicker than my EHD's. But even with all my drives, I like the idea of still having my files somewhere else because there is always the chance some big bad virus could affect them all since they stay connected more than not. I do think I notice things moving more slowly though than what my computer normally moves. Hopefully that will change once the initial backup is done.
