My Laptop Crashed!

Recommended Posts

I am sad to report that my laptop crashed last week. I'm happy, however, to say that there were no tears! Thanks to SG and Ro's advice, I've been saving all my files to a portable external hard drive for over a year and then backing that up regularly. Since I still have all my files and photos I decided to look at this experience as a great opportunity to start with a clean slate. My world looks more like Ro's office in the "before" photo from today's newsletter so an occasional reset is usually a good thing for me. Of course I still had to reinstall all my software and I still need to load all my styles and actions into PSE. I think my problem must have been Vista so I started with an upgrade to Windows 7. So far so good. I haven't been able to spend much time with my "new" computer but I have a 4 day weekend and I hope to make lots of progress this weekend. I just wanted to share my woes so thanks to all for listening (or reading). Now I'm off to load my styles.

Computer crashes are never fun, especially reloading all that software. My sweetie keeps a duplicate boot drive just in case. He's loaded all the software way too many times. So glad to hear your back-ups were current and that you didn't lose anything. A clean slate is always good. Enjoy your upgrade too. :)

Here's a hint for you. Backup the folder that holds your styles and actions also. In the future you won't have to reload them at all. Just copy the backed up file(s) to the proper place and voila! They are all there and ready to be used again! It's great. It works with any custom shapes you have added and/or filters also. It depends on which version of software that you use as to where it's stored exactly on your computer.

Oh, I am sooo sorry your computer crashed but happy that you didn't lose all your files - that is devasting - it happened to me a few years ago and I couldn't recover half of the things I had on there - and couldn't even remember all that was missing. Now I back up, back up, back up all the time!

Definitely not a 100% fun thing to have happen and this thread is another reminder of how important it is to BACK-UP! Is there much difference in Window 7...are you finding it easy to use? I am hoping to get a laptop someday and I know it will come with Windows 7 and will need to reinstall all my stuff, too. You may not enjoy installing everything but the joy of still having all your goodies will surely supersede this inconvenience!
