What Does It Take To Be On The Scrapgirl Team?

I applied for the Layout Artist position, and anxiously waiting to hear who got it. I appreciate you taking time to review the layouts so each applicant gets their fair chance. But, I have had a question in my mind. I wish I would have asked it before I sent my layouts: What does it take? What are you looking for? Experience necessary? Does your participation in the site have anything to do with it? Just curious. Can't wait to hear who got it.

I can't really say what they are looking for either but I will wish you luck. And remember, if you don't get chosen, keep trying to improve your skills and keep applying. I do know that tenacity is a good trait to have! You would be surprised by some of the artists and designers who were originally turned down but kept trying. That said, I wish you luck and hope to see you on the team one day soon!

The only thing we take into consideration when looking at prospective applicants is layout design talent. And while being an active member of the site of course doesn't hurt your chances, it's not a prerequisite to be chosen for the team. Education, age, longevity on the site hold no sway. We look for creativity that you show us through your layouts. We love to see new ideas, professionalism, interesting stories being told through art, etc. There is no checklist of items that we look for. It's all about the layouts.

I hope that helps to answer your question.

I know it's hard to wait. Hang in there.

There is a lot that we look for and it has nothing to do with how much or how long you have been on the message board.

We look for a sense of spatial balance, are things arranged well on the page? How is the person's sense of type, colour? Are their layouts fresh, dynamic, interesting? Do they showcase products well? Would our customers be inspired by them? And so on.....

We had so many applicants and few positions. If you were not selected this time, just keep practicing and try again. Trust us, it was a hard decsion to narrow it down.

I'm one of those people who was turned down the first time I applied! I asked for and got CC on the layouts I submitted, and kept working at it! I took to heart all the comments that were made. Then, later on, I applied again and was fortunate enough to be accepted.

That's exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks! Thanks for all of your replies. I want to improve on my craft and go further with it and every experience, submission, and cc helps! Good luck to all that applied!

Good luck Laura! Oh, and being turned down at the application can get you either step away or take the CC and try even harder. I chose the second option back then ;) and practiced practiced practiced, read e-books, took classes here at SG to improve my skills.

Good Luck to you and to everyone who applied - I am sure the SG team will make the right decision and I agree with what everyone has said on here - one must just keep trying and honing their skills - it's hard to be turned away, but don't take it personally if you are not selected - I am sure the team got MANY awesome candidates and I would imagine the selection process was quite difficult and tedious - I will be excited to hear who got it as well - it's always fun to see someone we know be selected to be on the team.

I was one of those who got turned down too! I received some wonderful CCs and practiced and practiced until I got better..so good for you and good luck!!

And just look where Brandy and Caroline are now!! Both are now SG designers! Just goes to show you where perseverance and practice, practice, practice can lead, if that's your ultimate goal/dream.

Good luck to everyone who applied - I'm anxiously waiting to see who the new team members are, too!

I too had an unsuccessful first application, but I KNEW this is what I wanted to do so I took advantage of all of SG's learning resources (CC, classes, University information) and did much like Caroline did.

Practice and determination are as important as a creative eye and digital skills!

Ok I admit that I was turned down, not once, not twice, but three times. LOL! I was determined though. I just had to find the right place for me here.

Well, Sara, you did finally make it and I am so glad you did - you really DO have that determination and it worked - I am so glad that you kept on applying and made it! You are awesome!

I have always wanted to be on the Scrap Girls Team - in any position available - but really don't know how to go about asking or applying - I'm just a member and that's pretty much all I am - I would give anything to be on the Team in some capacity. I did ask once, but nothing was available, so am a little bit "gun-shy" about asking again.

I didn't make the team this time either, my first time applying here at SGs. I'm sad, but at the same time - I'm just so happy to be here as a member and will continue to practice my designing skills and see what the future holds. I can't wait to hear who the new members are!

Just a little hint about becoming a team member ...

First, designers and layout artists have to apply and be accepted. That's widely known. But like we've been saying, keep trying, keep learning, don't get discouraged, take the constructive critisism that's given if not accepted, and reapply. As you've seen, many who are now full fledged product designers did just that!

Second, as far as the welcoming committee, it's a little different. It's not a position you apply for. Nor is it one you can really ask for. The best you can do is be chatty, be helpful and kind, be inviting, know your stuff when you are answering questions and answer them correctly, leave lots of love in the gallery, participate enthusiastically, follow the TOU to the letter, and encourage others. Treat others the way you want to be treated. The powers that be really do watch the boards and know what kinds of members have the skills and personallity that fits. If a position opens up then you have a good chance of getting an invitation. It's a really fun job so there isn't a lot of turn-over but the site is continually growing. As it does more WC are needed. So, just like the other two positions, there is an "application" process of sorts and it's all about you and how you interact on the site. So if you want to be on the WC just try to be all those things (or as many as you can) and you'll have a good chance!

So to all those who are hoping to be on the team some day I wish you the best! And may God place you in a postition that fits both for you and for SG!
