Help!

Oh help! My computer will not let me download my pictures from my Canon Rebel XT. I think that the file on the computer might be corrupt. The camera says busy as if it were connected but the computer can't find the camera. I went on line in search of the driver to download and reinstall as I can't find the original software disk. But I am getting nowhere. I found the driver on the Cannon site it said to download and instead I got a "driver whiz" that will scan my computer for an outdated or corrupt Cannon disk. It can identify that but then suddenly they want you to buy a program to fix it. GRRRR. Does anyone know how I might find the driver for free to download???? Suggestions of other things to try????

not sure what file you think is corrupt? the program from canon??? what operating system do you use? you can just download the photos onto your computer using windows... maybe try to download them using another system...if you have picasa ( a free program) you can also download with picasa

i am sure someone who knows more than me will stop by ...hope you get it solved... know you must be frustrated..i sure would be..lol

How are you downloading? I used to find that windows & my photo program were crossing wires. If I closed out of the automatic downloading & did it directly from the photo program, it went much better.

I am very new to the fancy camera thing; but, when my DD gave me her camera, she forgot to include the usb cord with it. Of course none that I had fit. So I stick the memory card into my card reader, at least you could get your pictures onto your computer until you get this worked out... and my DD sends me the usb!

Have to you tried to load the photos onto your computer with your memory card? The reason I ask, is because I wonder if there's a problem with your cable, since your program can't find the camera. One way to tell, is to check your drives after you've connected the camera, via the cable. The camera should show up in your drive list and if it doesn't, then I expect that there is a problem with the cable.

The information that you're getting from the site doesn't sound right, because it sounds like what you would get from one of those generic sites, that claim to be what you are looking for, run fake checks and try to charge money for it. There are also viruses that will cause this to happen - have you updated and ran your virus checker recently?

I put Canon Rebel XT driver in the search window and came up with pages of driver information. I looked for one with Canon as the distributor and found a list of drivers. You would have to choose your operating system from the list and download the appropriate driver. I hope this helps! :-)

Thanks for the help girls. I did a little more exploring this morning. I have two digital cameras so tried the other (Duh - problem solving is so simple sometimes.) The other camera works just fine which eliminates the computer or drive as a problem. I'm pretty sure it is the cable. So off to Best Buy to see if there is a generic cable that can replace it. Too bad the cable for the point and shoot has a smaller adapter end than the Rebel.

It does sound like it could be the cable then Pat. Before I got your last post, I was going to suggest that maybe the usb port had gone bad. I've had that happen. But since your other camera downloads, it's not that.

I've just had the card reader for my type of memory card that is built into my computer quit working. I have the USB cable for one of my cameras but not the other so I've switched to using a little memory card reader with usb. It cost me like $19.

I used to have trouble with my cameras sometimes. I finally broke down and bought a card reader (less than $20 bucks) and the problem went completely away. My computer looks for the reader - not the camera. SOOOOOO much easier than using all of those cables, etc.
