OMG! They're 10 days early and they're black - I can see they're floppy little ears! My son said his hound was outside and Carley was inside, but I think he fibbed about them getting together. Poor Tok got nipped for nothing! Well, okay, I guess it's better that he's done, but I'm pretty sure he isn't the daddy - he'll have to play adoptive daddy, I guess.

I wasn't ready for it and now I have to send my feather duvet and down pillows out to be cleaned. I thought I had seven more days to get her whelping box ready - now I just have to make a bassinet for them, because there's no way I'm having eight or more baby puppies in bed with me. I'd squash them! There's eight now and she's still panting and I'm in a panic - it's a good thing that Carley knows what she's doing. :-)

I have to go check on her, but just had to tell someone what has happened. All my well laid plans are in the potty! lol :-)

Oh wow:) What kind of hound does your son have? We have a beagle named Daisy. Hounds have a special place in my heart. Grew up with a beagle mix too.
You are certainly going to be busy there!! Do you have homes lined up for some of them already? (I know, it'll be WEEKS before they can leave their Mama!)

Sounds like Carley is doing an awesome job!! Congratulations!

My son has a retired from hunting black/tan. He's a big doll but I'm not sure how many people want a b/t hound/retriever mix. Ben is a beautiful dog and great with kids, but he isn't house trainable. He loves his own little shack outside and is a great watch dog, because he can scare of the bears in the area. Carley is very smart, learns quickly and loves to play, although she likes to think that she's the leader of the pack - she's also very protective. I'm not sure if it's a good mix and don't know if I can find people who will want the pups. I had several who were interested in a Retriever/Husky cross, but just don't know now. I might get away with keeping one or maybe two, but my DH would go nuts if I don't find homes for them. I do have the Vet, who will help me out with finding homes, so that's a blessing for me.

They sound really cute! When we thought we were having pups for 4th of July the vet had me taking Jada's temp 3 times a day. He said that their temp spikes way up when they are within 24 hours of delivering. Too late for you now I know! We didn't have pups, Jada had a false pregnancy, developed the sacks and everything but no puppies in them. Good luck finding homes for them.

Thanks Dee for the luck, I think I may need it. roflol Thank you to everyone who has left comments and yes, Karina, Surprise! is right! lol

I was hoping it would be a false pregnancy and that Tok was too old to father. Seems it wasn't Tok though. lol I bought a thermometer, a syringe to clean out their noses, bed pads so her box wouldn't get too messy, a little pair of scissors to help with the cords and get rid of the placenta, but couldn't get at them fast enough and five were born before I noticed. I've tried to squeeze a couple of pads under them all but it looks like it's gone into the feather bed as well. Carley messed the duvet up and made a real little nest for herself. roflol I'm not looking forward to the cleaning bill or sleeping on a plain mattress.

I thought she was napping, but it seems she was doing something else. I was reading up on puppy deliveries and it said that the dam will be looking for more attention prior to birthing and will not eat for twenty four hours prior either. She didn't eat yesterday and I thought it was the heat had caught up on her and she didn't feel much like going for her walks either. Last night she kept waking me, looking for attention, so when I read what I had I thought I should check on her and there were 5 puppies there. I was in shock! Man if I had of thought to turn the camera on myself, it would have been quite a picture. roflol I'm still overwhelmed by it all, but there hasn't been any more puppies, so maybe the Vet did see all the heads. He thought there could be more and didn't think one would make it, but there's eight healthy ones so far. :-)

congrats puppy-grammy! I bet you won't have any trouble with a hound/retriever mix. They should be smart & family-friendly - which is what most people are looking for anyway! :)

Thanks Jenna - you're right! Both types of dog are desirable for family pets. There's no reason to think that the pups won't house train, just because their dad isn't. He was raised outside and used for hunting, so he's accustomed to it. He is great with the kids - my 7 year old GD was playing with him and got tangled in his rope. When he felt the tug of the rope, he stopped moving and when she pulled away, he followed along. My son was impressed and told him what a good dog he was, as he got the tangle straightened out. I was just in shock. lol Thanks again. :-)

Yeah, brand new puppies. Congrats to you and your Carly. I had a cat once that made her nest in the bottom of my closet. She had, I think, six kittens. That was a very long time ago and now all my cats are either spayed or neutered.

Can't wait for your pictures/layouts.

Congrats on your new puppies, that's so excited. I'm a puppy mom in waiting. My sister's Pomeranian is expecting this month and I'm going to get one, I'm anxious to hear from my sister. And I can't wait to see a layout or two, or more...featuring the puppies.

For those who are interested, I've got Carley and the pups settled into their bassinet. They're all doing excellent and I've posted a photo of them into the photo club gallery. Here they are at a couple of hours age, with their tuckered out mom.

We had a red bone when I was small and he was a doll. Now, I'm impatient to see if they take on any other colour, although I expect to have brown patches like their dad. He's very handsome with colours very much like a doberman. I'm 98% sure that Ben is the dad, since the pups were ten days early, although my son says that they didn't get a chance to be together. I think he missed something. roflol

I'm sorry to hear about your Basset hound, but happy that you still have your Redbone and hope that he is with you for a very long time. When I told my son today, that Ben was likely a daddy - he told me that Ben chased another bear away, but then was out of breath and his neck swelled up. He has an appointment for Ben with the vet for next week but is afraid it's throat cancer. We're hoping not, but will have to wait and see.

Oh, I bet you are going to hear all kinds of "puppy whining" tonight, Heatheranne - maybe that takes a little longer but they will all be looking to nurse their new Mommy - They are precious - and don't new puppy babies just smell so sweet? Congratulations on your big litter!

There was some whining when they were being born. It was difficult for them all to find mommy's teets, but now they're all sleeping. As for nice puppy smell, I'll have to let you know about that. Right now, I'm trying to get rid of the smell from their birth. Hopefully my mattress, duvet and pillows don't fall apart in the washer or plug things up with feathers. I'm hoping my mattress will fit in one load! I have to throw out the sponge mattress underlays - there's just no sense in trying to clean them, but luckily there was only a small spot on the main mattress, which I've bleached, so it will look cute when it's dry. roflol It'll be clean and that's the main thing.

Thank Jane - that's something that I've aspired to be known as, 'The Puppy Grannie!'. :hahohi: :hahohi: :hahohi: I've had several offers from SG friends now but they all live too far away. I'm sure that between the Vet and I, we can find people in our area, near Peterborough, Ontario, who will adopt them. I had four, who were interested in the Retriever/Husky mix, but I'm not sure if they'll want Retriever/Black and Tan Hound mix. I can just see hints of brown in their little faces today. They're just so cute! lol :-)

Congrats, Heatheranne. If I were closer, I'd have homes for 2 of them too. My BIL just bought a chocolate lab, all hunting trained and crate trained, paid beaucoup bucks, and my sister took one look and said... Awwww does she HAVE to stay in the crate? So much for the $$$ they paid - she's going to spoil that dog.

If you have problems getting placing them, maybe if hubby started them with hunting training - at least getting them used to a gun shot - it might make people more interested, especially if dad was a good hunter which he sounds like.

That throat swelling may only be from straining after chasing the bear since the dog was on a chain, but check to make sure the bear didn't get in a bite or swipe to get infected. Maybe instead of calling the dad a black/tan, you should call him a bear dog since he's obviously got a knack for that.

Welcome to Scrap Girls! Thank you! My son was walking him when it happened and the leash was pulled from his hand. Ben was trained to hunt bear, so he trees them if he sees them. This bear was young, but was at the back door, when my son went out with Ben. Roy was startled and hit the bear in the head, then Ben went nuts and treed the bear up the hill from where they live. The authorities don't want to hurt the bear or relocate him unless they have to, because he's young and they figure something happened to his mom. They're hoping that startling him off will give him the idea that he's not welcome around people.

I'm grateful for your input about his neck. It's possible that he hurt it when he pulled the leash and he could have pulled on his chain when not seen. He'll be seeing the Vet soon and we'll know for sure then. As for hunt training, none of us hunt but my son has friends who do and would be willing to train them, but I'm sort of hoping for homes where they'll get sucked up.

Crates are good for them to go to bed in at night or to go to during the day if they choose - with the door open. I've known people who put the dogs in crates while they work and let them out for a couple of hours in the evening, then crate them for the night again. I really don't understand why they have an animal if they are going to keep them caged all the time. I'm happy that the lab has some freedom and they can still crate him at night, if they choose to. My dogs, share my bed - thus the puppies on the bed - lmao and they sleep anywhere they choose to. I will be making a pen for the puppies though - they just can't run loose until they're house trained or at least paper trained. This is were crates come in handy for pups. :-)
