It's October. It's Friday. What do you say we have a little fun?

I have a daughter who has a way of saying things that make me laugh out loud. One day, when we were driving down the road, she suddenly said, "The TVs and radios are haunted - like the dead are communicating with us through them. It's like ESPN or something!"

I choked a little bit and then said, "Oh, I didn't know that." And then I burst out laughing. Finally, I let her in on the joke. ESPN is a cable sports channel!

Every time my husband and I tell this story, everyone in the room cracks up. But not Julianne. Even though more than five years have passed since she said it, she still gets a look on her face that says she doesn't understand what is so funny. And that look makes us laugh even harder!

This is the kind of family story that needs to be documented in our digital scrapbooking layouts so that it doesn't slip away from our memories.

(Here's the layout I made in 2005 so that I could document this story. It's one of the very first layouts I made. I slaved over it for hours!)

So it occurred to me this morning to challenge you to create something that documents a funny family story. But the question remained...how? How could we do it and have an extra boost of fun at the same time?

I thought and thought and thought and thought about it. And then - after I had thought some more - I got an idea: "Why don't I start a game on the Scrap Girls Message Board,” I thought, "and let people do something strange and unusual to win?"

We're going to have FOUR (4) winners this time. All four winners will receive a $20 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Everyone who plays will receive a $2 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

What a fun contest! This is my first-ever post (so I hope I get it right). I can't wait to read everyone's funny family stories. My story involves (as most of our family's stories do), one of my littlest nephews, Mason. This was taken the first Thanksgiving after we lost our mom to cancer, and the once-joyous holidays were now a dreary affair. However, my sister-in-law and I worked very hard to maintain all of the family traditions that Mom had worked so hard to instill for us. We were sitting at her kitchen table with a box of tissues, when 3-year-old Mason appeared, wearing his baby brother's pants. My sis-in-law and I started laughing so hard. Encouraged, Mason began making "strong man" poses to show off his muscles, complete with lion-roaring sound effects. His antics were EXACTLY what we needed, and it made the entire holiday much brighter. After he finished posing, he walked over to his mom to tell her that he thought his pants were a little tight. Luckily, his baby brother didn't seem to mind sharing! Ha.

I have the perfect thing to get the ball rolling. This was a very early layout I did using Syndee's beautiful "A Collage Unleashed Collection Biggie".

The story still cracks me up to this day! (It has been edited down further on my LO):

Today we had the maintenance people over. Three of them, in fact. Why? Because Olin was trying to throw away the empty toothpaste tube from inside the shower and it landed in the toilet. (This isn’t the first time. In January he kicked his shoe from the bed and it ricocheted off the bathroom door and splashed into the toilet.) He asked me to bring the claw “grabber.” I brought it. I tried it. Somehow the toothpaste only seemed to duck further out of reach. This should have been my first indication of impending trouble.

At the sound of his troubled gasps my stomach tightened. I was in the bedroom when I heard him head across the kitchen with a mission, “You’d better not try to fish that out with the dishwashing gloves!!” He froze mid-step. Hesitantly he agreed to try to pick it out by sticking his bare hand in the toilet. He dove in and shot right back out like something had bit him “Acckkk!!!!! Gross!” He flung soap all over trying to hasten the antibacterial action. The toothpaste tube was still MIA. So we flushed.

It was forgotten for about 1.5 hours. I returned from the bank, flushed the toilet, and the bowl filled to the brim with water. I called the one person that everyone calls in this type of situation: Dad. His advice was to dump hot water down the drain. That didn’t wok either. I broke down and called maintenance, still unsure if I could face the questions.

“We have a situation over in apartment 2…”

A few hours later, Olin long gone at work, a savior finally came. He saw my claw “grabber” and fished around with it, then stuck his hand in. “I already tried that!!” In fact, we had unbolted the toilet from the wall and flipped it sideways to try to find the Colgate culprit. The maintenance man was perplexed but left and returned with a drain snake. After 15 minutes, he called for backup. After an hour of sweat and tense conversation with three men about WHY there was a toothpaste tube buried deep within my toilet on Good Friday, they finally left. My toilet was saved. And the Kamikaze Colgate spirit can finally rest.

I originally did this layout for my photobook of our trip to Boston. I changed the text to put in the story. I just wish I had a picture of his face when I was showing him the map. He's a children's librarian and is well aquainted with the book. We both had a good laugh.

OK, this layout is a couple of years old, and not my best, but I just love the story and the photo. Here's the journaling, which tells my funny story:
"["I am NOT a cookie!"] I just love it when you say this to me! Every time I snuggle down in your bed with you, I give you a big squeeze...but before I can give you a big, nibbly smooch, you insist that you are not a cookie! “Cake?”, I ask. “No!” “Ice cream?”, I persist. “No! I am a Human Being!”, you proclaim. Too bad - you are just so darn cute and cuddly, I want to eat you all up! Yum, yum, yum, yum!" She is just too funny! Thanks for the opportunity to share!

Well my whole gallery seems to be full of goofy family layouts. It's sort of what we're all about here in the Campbell house As soon as I saw the Fun Friday game topic I knew I had to revisit an old favorite that maybe some of the newer members haven't seen. It will always be one of my favorite layouts because it's one of my favorite memories.

This is also my first try at this. My story spans 4 generations:

My dad grew up in a tiny town on the north shore of Lake Superior. In 1960 when I was 13 we drove from California to Minnesota, to visit Schroeder and all the family there. We went swimming in my dad’s favorite swimming hole in the Temprence river and I was terrified of the leeches in the water and only went in once. In 1979, returning from our overseas assignment, my own family stopped in Schroeder to visit my grandmother and my dad who now lived there. I told my children all the stories about my trip when I was young and about the swimming hole. When we got to the river, my 5 year old daughter looked at the water, and then looked up at my dad and asked, “Grandpa, are there BLOOD SNICKERS in there? Several years ago my husband and I, now retired, visited my dad and the river. It hasn’t changed much. This past July we had a family reunion and I heard my daughter tell her 12 year old daughter not to worry about the blood snickers. My granddaughter looked at her mom like she was nuts.....

Fun game, Ro. This was the first funny family thing that popped into my head.

The journaling says: When Doug was 3 his sister was having a Christmas Party at Kindergarten. Doug was upset because he couldn't go, so we put out the Nativity while she was gone, talking at great length about who each figure represented. When Yvonne came home, he pulled her into the living room where the Nativity was and started to tell her all about it. He said "Here's Mary, and here's Joseph, and this is the baby Jesus, and over here, these are the THREE WISE GUYS."

I'm not entering, just joining in on the fun. This story still cracks me up and I'm in it. My middle child was given to me to make sure there will always be humor in my life. At this point he was 3 years old and just recently started potty training.

No Standing Potty

I was at Target and desperately needed to use the toilet. So I took Reagan and Asher with me into the big stall. As soon as I sat down Reagan shakes his finger at me and says, "Point your penis down!"
"I don't have a penis," I replied.
"Yes you do," he said, "Are you sitting on it?"
"No I am a girl I don't have a penis," I say as the stall next to me chuckles.
"Yes you do! I can't see your penis," he says as I stand up to wipe and pull up my pants.
"That's because girls don't have a penis," I repeat again. I am starting to feel like a broken record, "Would you like to flush the potty for me?"

Our family is a wild bunch. Any time you get us together, there is NO telling what will happen. I sifted through hours of pictures and videos laughing and gaffawing (seriously). But one memory that's always been funny to all of us is Thanksgiving 2006... My younger brother (who, himself, has always been a riot in his own right) decided it was time to let his namesake in on a little mischief. So he got my mom's eye pencil and went to work. My little 10 month old Brayden Alan was more than willing to be the subject of Uncle Alan's fun... and obviously none of us stopped him. These pictures still crack us all up. And my brother keeps trying to one up himself every year. (Sigh.)

What a fun idea. I had to do some research to find a date on when this event happened but couldn't. I did however, have a great time looking back over the younger years picturs of my now almost 7 year old. Wow, how they grow up SO fast.

Dad and Keith, my parents neighbour and friend, had been cutting wood and stacking it for the fireplaces, when they decided to take a break. After a couple of beverages, they began to talk about the fireplaces and Keith recalled his past evening.

"I always put my ashes in the ash bucket beside the fireplace, before I start a new fire and that's what I did last night. I got into bed and the next thing I know, I could smell smoke, but it wasn't quite right, so I went down to the basement, to see if everything was okay. To my shock, a box of kindling was smoldering!

I had set the ash pail down, next to the kindling box and didn't realize that there were any hot coals in it. Just think! If I had fallen to sleep, I might have been sophisticated!"

We all started to laugh and Keith got upset with us because he couldn't see the humour, then dad said - "but Keith, you mean suffocated, don't you - not sophisticated, as you said?"

When Keith realized the slip of his tongue, he laughed along too and said, "There's no chance of me becoming sophisticated, but I darn well could have been suffocated!" And, we all had a good laugh! :-)

"For some time now, many of your sentences have started with this. Your "sister" made her first appearance when you were 3. Was it because Brittany was with us for some time? We're not sure. At first you started talking about her at daycare, telling the teachers all kinds of stories and mentioning her often. We thought it was kind of funny to have to explain that, no, we didn't have another child that didn't live with us. As time went on, you talked about her more and more. Her name is Katie, Snow White, Tinkerbell. She lives in Newfoundland. One day you spent 10 minutes explaining to me how exactly we would get to her house. You told me her mommy had died and now she lives with her daddy and she gets to do anything she wants. When you tell some people about your sister and they say "You don't have a sister!" you get a little upset, insisting that you do indeed have a sister. Sometimes she is younger than you, sometimes you are younger. Sometimes she's a baby, sometimes she's a big girl. After 2 years, you're still talking about her. Now, you mention her when you want a reaction. "My sister punched me." "My sister,she said a bad word." "My sister is allowed to do that." Are you a lonely-only-child? Is this a sign of a healthy (or unhealthy) imagination? We haven't discouraged you from this idea, believing it is imagination. Friends and family have gotten used to hearing you talk about your sister and think its somewhat cute. I guess we'll wait and see how and if this sister of yours grows up with you!"

LOL, I am very happy for this challenge. I always get a laugh out of this memory of my oldest DS at age six. Be sure to look for the fluoride "poison pills" in the layout (brushwork) LOL! Thanks for the memories, Ro! And, BTW, Julianne's story is hilarious!

Journaling:
One night after dinner Terry walked by me and, using his best King of the Munchkins voice to talk out of the side of his mouth, whispered, “Teacher tried to poison me.” I grabbed his arm to stop him to ask what he meant. He reached into his jeans pocket and pulled out a handful of small white tablets. “Every day she calls me up to her desk and gives me one of these and tells me to take it. I pretend to put it in my mouth but then slide it down into my pocket,” he said. We had signed him up for the school fluoride program and had told him about it, but apparently had not explained it clearly enough. Of course, we had always told him not to accept anything from strangers, so he was just following our instructions. I love this memory of him at age six, whispering his secret.

Even when you were a 3 1/2 pound preemie,
the nurses said you were dancing in your isolette!

When you were two years old, we caught you dancing on the coffee table.
When asked to please get down, you stood up tall and announced:

“I only dance on TABLES!”

Oh my gosh! I love all these entries. I'm far too tired to dig for a funny scrap page, and especially too tired to make a new LO!
This photo requires a bit of a prelude: My daughter had estranged herself from me for over 5 years. (I will NOT go into the devastation this caused me and my granddaughters). During the estrangement, she had 2 more children, two little boys. Shortly before this photo, my son-in-law decided I SHOULD be able to see the children. We got to get re-acquainted with the girls, and we met the boys, 3 and 4 at the time. The girls had called their grandpa "Pop Pop" and the name was new to the boys. Micah, 4, and Luca, 3. They began to call Pop Pop "Popeye". I thought it was adorable, and hoped it would stick, but as we spent more and more time with them, they emulated their sisters and addressed Pop Pop as such! Not my funniest story, but... the preceding posts more than make up for my lack of humor!

I was hard to pick just one funny story as we have MANY to choose from. This had always been one of my favorites.

When you girls were little, I used to drive you to
elementary school on my way to work.I am not a

Skype has become a favorite way to stay in touch with the grandkids who are far far away. It's so fun to watch them run up to the screen to show us things, then bounce away to play. This was a landmark event for our granddaughter, age 5 that we watched via Skype. We found ourselves straining to see in her mouth as we all focused on her efforts to get that first tooth out.

Journaling: Elsa worked on pulling out her first loose tooth on Valentines Day. She was successful at last with a little help from Dad as we watched her via Skype and got some low-res shots of the event. Feb 14, 2010

Our daughter’s car had been sitting under a tree at our son’s house for two years while she was in the Peace Corps. When we opened up the hood to do engine maintenance and had to scoop out handfuls of leaves, we were startled to find two tiny baby squirrels. They didn’t even have their eyes open yet! We put them in a box up in the tree, hoping the mother would come back for them.

When we realized the mother wasn’t coming back for them, we all took a turn holding and petting them. Afterwards we felt something crawling on our skin and found out all of us had gotten fleas from the babies. It turned into a giggling good time for our family. Our son’s family decided they would rescue the squirrels and spent the next several months, feeding them with an eyedropper, playing with them, and loving them until they were able to climb into the trees and make their own home. One of them came back a few times and would jump down onto my son’s shoulders from the tree branches to get some petting.
