I got a question as to how I made my photo into the same shape as a scalloped paper in this layout: Grace. Specifically we are talking about the scalloped frame paper in Kitchen Chic Paper Super Mini.

There are probably several ways it can be done, but I thought I'd share the technique I used here. These instructions are PSE 6 specific, so it might be different in your software.

  • Bring SNU_KitchenChic_PprSuperMini_Wire into your layout.
  • Select your magic wand tool.
  • With the SNU_KitchenChic_PprSuperMini_Wire layer active (click on it), click on an area of your layout OUTSIDE of the scallped frame. You should now see marching ants around the outside of the scallop and around the perimeter of your layout. That means that everything beween the outside of the frame to the edges of your layout is selected.
  • But we want the inverse selected! To do that, right click on your layout while the marching ants are marching. A drop down menu will appear. Click "Select Inverse."
  • Ok, with that done, go back to your layers palette and create a new layer. You can do this by clicking the little square icon at the far left at the top of your layers palette, or you can go to the top menu and click Layer>New>Layer. Your new layer should appear above the SNU_KitchenChic_PprSuperMini_Wire layer. Make sure it's active - click on it if you need to.
  • Now go back to your tools menu and chose your paint bucket tool. It doesn't matter what color you have. Click anywhere INSIDE of the marching ants. Your color should fill the shape, and it should be the same shape as SNU_KitchenChic_PprSuperMini_Wire.
  • To make the marching ants go away, click Ctrl D (hold your Ctrl button down while you hit the letter D. This is a shortcut for deselect.
  • Now you want to resize your shape. Click on your new shape so that it's active. Select your move tool. Hold down your Alt key, mouse over the bottom left corner, click and push the corner toward the center. If you hold the Alt key while you resize the shape, and it will stay in the middle.
  • You should now have a new shape, ready to be used as a clipping mask. Put your photo on a layer directly above your new shape, and with the photo layer selected, Click Ctrl G.
