I recently put together this layout for the Tuesday Freebie Challenge: Sausage Cacciatore

I had several people ask how I got the effect of the sketched pots on the background, so I figured I'd post my steps here for everyone...

Basically I blended two papers together!

From Brandy Murry's Bon Appetit Collection Biggie, I opened the blackboard paper and the white pots paper. I put the black paper as the bottom layer, with the pots paper as the layer above it.

With the pots layer active, I chose the magic wand tool with a tolerance of 50. In the lower half of the paper, I clicked on the white section of the paper, and clicked delete. This removed the majority of the white paper, while leaving the pots and cracks intact.

I then took the pots paper, and added the Difference blending mode. To soften some of the visible cracks, I erased away some of the pots layer using a soft-edged brush at 35% opacity.


And that's all there is to it! Brandy's paper already had a great sketched effect to the pots, I just combined the papers to isolate that section.

Great background, Tiza. Love your technique. This once again proves that the Magic Wand tool in combination with inspiration is indeed MAGIC!
