Cindyrene
I'm teaching a friend to use PSE today to scrapbook digitally. She's been a paper scrapper in the past, but has PSE 6 on her computer. I've learned using PSE 8, and there are some different features apparently. (1) I almost always use templates when scrapping, either using someone else's or designing my own, and then put my pictures in place using clipping masks (CTRL+G). They don't work the same way. With CTRL+G, we get a little icon with a plus sign in the layers pallate on the corner of the photo, and the layer changes to a "pass through" layer. What do I do? (2) My pngs that have transparent backgrounds show up as gray backgrounds once they are moved onto a layout. What's up with that?
Elisha
Gosh, I've been working with CS4 for a couple of months now, and PSE9 for a month or so before that, but you'd think I'd remember my trusty PSE6 from a few months ago... But you need help fast. I'm not sure what's up with the Ctrl +G. I used it all the time. It should work, and I'm not familiar with the problem you're describing!!! Try this though: in your layers palette, holding your alt key down mouse over the line in between the two layers you want to clip together. your cursor should change to a circle icon. now click. This should create a clipping mask. As far as bringing in a png file into your layout. The programs are different. How are you bringing in your files? I'm assuming you're bringing it in, draggin it up into your layout from the project bin at the bottom. In PSE6, you have to bring your png DOWN into your layout. meaning with the png the active project, drag it DOWN into your layout. (I think - either way it's probably the opposite of what you're doing) Try that.
Cindyrene
Thank you so much! Your quick answer saved us. It was important to move the pics in by dragging from the full-size photo rather than from the bin. The pngs now have transparent backgrounds! We were able to pull stuff in from the bin, like I do with PSE8, but not only did the pngs not have transparent backgrounds on them, also the pics were much smaller, and harder to work with. I doubt they would have printed with good resolution, either! So - much better now! The CTRL+G started working after we close both Picasa and PSE and then opened them back up again, so that's taken care of as well. We only had 45 minutes or so after lunch, and after your response came in, to work before she had to leave, but I was able to show her how to use a layout template, and a page came together quickly and beautifully that time! PBarnes
I'm so glad that Elisha was up so early and was able to help. I'm not much of an early-bird.

Cindyrene
Not usually my favorite part of the day, but I'm grateful for those that enjoy it so much! It's especially helpful since I'm 6 hours ahead of U.S. time!
