We just finished (tonight) reading The Night Fairy by Laura Amy Schlitz. It is wonderful. It's the story of a young night fairy who gets her wings injured and has to live in the day world and deal with her feelings about what has happened to her. The author has an amazing gift for weaving a story that is beautiful and yet raw when it needs to be. This fairy isn't all sweetness. And those she crosses paths with aren't always either. Our girls (8 1/2 yo) loved this and so did DH and I. We couldn't wait to read the next chapter. The illustrations by Angela Barrett are beautiful. There are enough illustrations to keep the flow going, but not so many as to take away the power of the imagination in seeing this story.

This book would be appropriate for kids 3rd grade and up as some of the vocabulary is pretty challenging. But the story itself is a great stepping stone to talk about how we see ourselves and others and how we deal with loss.

Just thought you might like to know.

Thanks for the suggestion, Debbie - I will have to get that for my Grands - Lucy will be 11 this year and Campbell will be 8. I'm sure they would love it!
