Hi there,
I'm Cassandra and I have been Googling for hours and hours trying to find tutorials on how to make my own vintage backgrounds. I have Photoshop Elements 8 and would like to know if you could help me find some tutorials on how to get started making them. I am not sure what all I would need as far as brushes, masks, etc. If you could also show me where I would find ones for commercial use. I appreciate your help. Thanks!

Hi Cassandra, welcome to Scrap Girls! If you go to the Boutique (You'll see the tab for it in the green bar at the top of this page) and put "Vintage" (be sure to use the quotation marks) in the search box, several pages of vintage themed items will come up for you. There would be some commercial items within those. For commercial items, you could also go to the Categories drop down box on the left side of the Boutique page, scroll down to Commercial and you will see a whole list of commercial items to choose from. Hope this helps! :)

Making your own backgrounds is covered in Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed: Photoshop Elements - Downloadable version. There is also some information on creating your own backgrounds in MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed: Photoshop Elements - Downloadable version These are the best learning resources I know of and they are on sale now.

You might also want to check here in the Scrap Girls University. There is a Tutorial Topics drop down box on the right side of the page. HTH :)

Theresa has given you some great advice. The designers all have different techniques and methods for creating their backgrounds. If they gave away all their secrets, then no one would buy their products. That being said, I'm not a designer and I will tell you a really easy way to get started making your own backgrounds is using the ScrapSimple Paper Templates that you can find in the boutique. You can color them, combine them with photos or combine different templates together. Some of the textured ones go a long way in creating vintage looking background but there are lots of neat wallpaper kind of pattterns too. A lot of it is just playing around until you find the kind of look you are after. There are personal use and commercial use versions of most of the SS templaes. There is also a free e-book on how to use the ScrapSimple line of products.

HTH

Hi Theresa, and welcome! Looks like you've already received great advice. The other advice, depending on how much time you have, is consider purchasing some of the fabulous vintage backgrounds, either pre-colored (in kits) or gray-toned (ScrapSimple) that you can shade and color yourself.

I love making my own stuff, but love getting finished layouts done, too. As you learn more about using these, especially the ScrapSimple products, through the books above and the great tutorials here, then you can add your own creations to your stash.

We have also had a few challenges here that have provided us with some interesting backgrounds - taking photos of different textures make some really unique backgrounds and I wonder how it would do if you took some close-ups of lace, ribbons, fabric, and those kinds of things to use for your vintage backgrounds? I think we were all pretty amazed at how great our backgrounds looked when we took photos of baskets, bricks, stones, sidewalks, dish towels even, and just anything that would provide an interesting texture.

Just a thought!

Just want to add my welcome to Scrap Girls. You've gotten some great advice from the gals. As Sara said, we just had a great challenge on how to use textures to create your own background papers using blending modes. What fun that was.

I know that you will love it here.
